I remember one year Whiteville came up and upset a highly rated Owen team. Good times.

Owen flamed out early a few times in the playoffs but they made the 3rd round a lot. Bandys and Maiden had their number a few times too I remember. The conference was pretty weak back then which didn't help.

Playing in a combined 2a or 3a classification was tougher. That maiden team had the all time leading rusher in state history at the time.

One of the best high school games I’ve been to. Watching Antione Ikard and Shawn Gibbs go at back and forth was awesome to witness.

yeah but we got um , and most of the rest of the conference for years and we are back with a vengeance this year !!!!

Yep, still hurts like a knife in the gut. But we still beat Owen when Mitchell couldn’t.

There were many years where 3 way tie ended in a coin toss. Making the playoffs back then was so hard. You wonder how those teams would’ve done in this 8 division playoff model?

Crazy story, I was sitting outside the locker room after Mitchell beat us and coach Riddle sit down beside me. This was after the coin toss so I had no idea the outcome. I said “ good game coach “, and he replied” good luck son’. He was a class act.

He’s definitely a defining coach from the WHC and deserves that respect. I didn’t play for him but I respected him and still do. I never beat him.
