The WHC went a surprising 5-1 the opening week, with the lone (and expected) loss belonging to Madison. Avery surprised everyone by hanging 53 on Ashe, and pulling the starters. Mitchell and Heritage both had good victories against regional powers, and Owen and Polk got off on the right track with big wins.

West Wilkes (0-1) @ Avery (1-0)

The Vikings came out swinging last week, and never let up, demolishing Ashe 53-33. Another NWNC team rolls into newland this week, and bet that Avery will be ready. Troy Hoilman is a mobile gunslinger, and has the receivers to get it to. West Wilkes should be a little tougher up front than Ashe, but Avery should roll at home.

Avery 35

West Wilkes 20

North Buncombe (1-0) @ Madison (0-1)

The Blackhawks looked strong in their season opener, and Madison couldn't handle a down Carver. The juice jug will likely stay with North Buncombe this year.

North Buncombe 42

Madison 14

Cabarrus Co-Op (0-1) @ Mitchell (1-0)

The Mountaineers overcame some 1st half woes, and took down 3a Erwin on the road last week. This week they welcome Brad Hoover's Co-op to Memorial stadium. The Co-op will have a few athletes, but Mitchell's strength up front, and dynamic skills players will be too much. Expect a much better 1st half this week.

Mitchell 42

Co-op 14

Erwin (0-1) @ Mountain Heritage (1-0)

Heritage fought off a tough Brevard late Friday night to claim victory. Erwin, on the other hand, gave up 17 4th quarter points, falling to Mitchell. Expect better games from both teams, with heritage's defense being the deciding factor.

Mountain Heritage 28

Erwin 24

Polk (1-0) @ North Gaston (1-0)

Polk flew by Cherokee last week, looking much more like their old selves under Bruce Ollis. This week they travel to North Gaston, who just downed county-rival East Gaston. Polk should win this game, pulling away late.

Polk 35

North Gaston 20
Owen (1-0) is idle this week

Looks pretty good Mountie. I strongly doubt the Heritage - Erwin game will be that close though, Heritage should win comfortably.

They should, but like some of the Murphy fans with Pisgah, I have a feeling that Erwin will shape up into a pretty decent team this season. This game likely won't be a shootout or a lopsided affair due to a. Heritage's slight lack of offensive prowess, and b. Heritage's strong defense.

Bro agree with you, erwin is down this season, heritage defense is real deal if you dont have strong passing attack you are in for long night.

Have heard that West Wilkes is worse than Ashe. Vikings should roll again. Let's just hope they don't pay an egg or get someone hurt...
If possible, I think I'm more excited about a potential Avery return more than Avery fans lol. The last 4 years the Mitchell/Avery game has stunk, but man! Those used to be the best game of the year. Hate, fights, snow and mutual respect. I really hope that Avery is strong this year, and last week wasn't just a fluke.

I would be surprised if Erwin can score 24 on Mtn Heritage, the only reason they even scored on Mitchell is because Mitchell fumbled on thier own 13. Someone asked last week if Mitchell is that good or Erwin that bad I guess we'll see, it was their first game and the QBs first start but they will have to improve a lot and they'll have to pass because as always Joey going to have his team run with smash your mouth football and slow the game down and keep your offense off the field, so unless Erwin can stop them ( which I doubt) the won't have much time or possessions. it's certainly a game I want to keep up with plus the Murphy / Franklin game.

Is Erwin more dangerous passing or running this year?
Last Friday night nether. 90 yrds rushing ,86 of them by #16 Carson and 40 yrds passing. When I saw thier QB and receivers especially thier big tight end #11 plus with Mitchell D being a big question mark this year I was concerned but Mitchell covered thier guys and kept the young QB rattled. Thing is now their going to Mtn Heritage who thrives in running and ball control and Mitchell ran for 311 yards just shot themselves in the foot in the first half fumbles on Erwin's 4 & 1.

From what I've been told , he knew if he stayed at Mitchell he wouldn't get to start at QB until his senior year so he transfered last year to Avery. But while I obviously never want Mitchell to lose to them , I'm glad to see Avery maybe being competitive again.

Mitchell could have let Hoilman kid play Oh and Pitman play in the bank field.Pittman is more of a running back than he is a passing QB but he's one good Atheltic

While I get your point and while the Avery QB does seem to be more a pure passer then Noah, the thing is Noah last year passed for 1550 yards and rushed for 1357 yard according to Maxprep and one could argue that quite a few of his longest runs came when he was scrambling in a pass play and him seeing a opening and taking advantage of it which may not translate to switching him to just a running back. So you're Troy and wanted to start as a QB for two years do you stay at a school were they have a 1000+ yard passing and rushing QB and take the chance the couches look at the way you described or they may look at the other way.

Both are great QB’s and both have and will have great hs careers. Sometimes it’s just fit. What Mitchell does is a perfect fit for Noah. And what Avery is doing is a great fit for Troy. Both will have a great season this year.
Right, well put

The WHC went 4-1 this week. Polk and Mitchell pitched shutouts, Avery lit up the scoreboard AGAIN in an impressive offensive performance, and Heritage pulled away from Erwin late similar to Mitchell last week. The conference as a whole looks to be the strongest it's been since Hendo left back in 17.

Is Avery big 1aa or small usually?

Avery should and I would expect to be big 1aa.

If what I'm hearing is so, Mitchell will more than likely be big this season. Had a staff member throw out a number of 517. Now this is just a big old rumor and I hate to even post it but.....I did and it could very well be way way way off. Don't shoot the messenger if I'm wrong, laugh all you want but please dont shoot. Would be a big jump in numbers from last year.

Hmmm I've heard the exact opposite bowhunter. Around 450. Either way, I expect the Mountaineers to compete and go deep.

That's what I say, who knows, I thought the number was high but I knew last years Sr. Class was small. Will be interesting. But I agree, I think a deep run is expected either way.

Yeah when conference games start it’s gonna be some knock down drag out games that’s for sure.

Yeah I was told this morning at church that Mitchell will be 1AA this year with the enrollment number it is right now.
