It's being reported that the FBI knew that Farook was communicating with a radical, because they were monitoring said radical. The question was raised in a radio interview I heard this morning: How much contact with a radical by an individual -- even an American citizen -- does it take before the FBI starts monitoring them? Perhaps Farook and his even more radical wife could have been stopped if the FBI had shifted their focus to them?

I could be wrong but I thought that I read that the person he was communicating with was not considered dangerous at the time, but rather someone to watch. The FBI director said they are pursuing 1,000 cases in this country of potential sympathizers and simply don't have enough resources.

Once again all of their Constitutionally questionable tactics in gathering our personal information failed to help.

I thought there was some kind of crazy stuff about can/cannot. Suspect call out of US, initiate tracking both parties. Suspect and other party within US, cannot expand to the other party. Sounded stupid the first time I heard it too.

I don't think there's any way to catch every terrorist nut trying to blow us up. For all we know, DHS may have foiled lots of bad guys before they miss one. And the fact that Farook was in contact with some 'watched' targets doesn't necessarily equate to him plotting an attack. I think this is a very tricky job and we will never get it 100% right and it's really easy for some to play armchair QB by saying how wrong our approach is.

I wasn't talking about DHS. I was talking about FBI/Patriot Act nonsense.

Yes, I understand, but I wasn't replying to your statement. :) I don't have the knowledge of the FBI/Patriot Act nonsense as I do some of the other systems that are in use.
