When is it going to be OK to have higher expectations for UK football?

Four years in, Stoops still hasn't beaten a team that finished with a winning record.

It has taken those same 4 years to barely make a bowl game, even when there are a thousand bowls and they started last year taking teams with a losing record.

Four years in, and the QB depth is as terrible as I've ever seen. We're having to start a 185 pound JUCO QB who had zero Power 5 offers.

Our defense still looks like something Mike Major, Mike Archer, and Rick Minter put together.

Do you guys care to let me know when it's going to be OK to raise my expectations for Kentucky football?

I don't want to upset my fellow fans by having unrealistic expectations.

Thanks.

This is a great question. The sunshine pumpers will tell you not yet. The haters say now. Idk personally, but I'm kinda pissed. We beat bad teams and have beat no one of substance.

Our defense is still horrible. We don't appear to an SEC caliber qb in the roster ready to play. We do have 3 great running backs and a fairly good run blocking O line. But the O line can't pass block worth a damn.

Our coaching staff is still questionable. And they coach way too consrrcatively and scared.

I don't see how there are any excuses available for next year. I've just given up on this year and willing to accept the crap bowl game and say I guess that's something.

But yeah, next year if we don't win 7-9 games and spring a few upsets of better teams, it's time to start over again.... Ugh

Next season. No reason UK can't win 9 games with the team we have returning plus RSs.

It's OK now but isn't going to happen until better defensive players are signed/developed.

Hire a coach that plays to win the game, a risk taker.

This staff is way too conservative with what we have to work with. We will never be.

I'll keep saying it until it sinks into the U.K. Football casual fan.

To have a defense that is talented and two deep takes 8-10 years in the SEC. Since U.K. has no QB, that makes winning against good SEC teams an impossible task for Stoops or any coach at U.K.

With the schedule next year a 6-6 record looks like it will be the ceiling with this staff.
I'm not sure I see the supposed increased difficulty in the schedule. It's basically the same schedule except you trade a road game against Alabama for a home game against Ole Miss.

That is garbage. Vandy has an SEC caliber defense that has performed very, very well against teams that have gashed us.

It's kinda funny. If we beat a team, it's because they are terrible.if that same team beats us, it's because they have passed us.

We have improved. Anyone that can't see that just doesn't want to.
we have improved. it's just not all that much and comes at a snails pace.

Help me out with your math. If a coach comes in and recruits top classes for 5 straight years, shouldn't he be able to field a strong defense?

Or are you saying those first few classes will never be top quality, because they don't have enough competition?

Yeah the team obviously has improved against similar competition but it's like bragging about being the tallest midget in the room. It's kinda irrelevant in the scheme of things.

whenever you want guy. they are YOUR expectations after all. I'm just happy we went 4-4 and 6-6 overall. its a huge stepping stone for this program and gets that bowl monkey off our back. the future is bright.
This reaction is why UK is still where they are. UK is in the SEC. Football is taken kinda seriously in this league. They've won a few NC's in this league, and we have people happy with 6-6 record. That's a C average. It's mediocrity. It's "Well they played hard". It's why Stoops got an extension.
The expectations are just not very high. So when, you don't expect much, you are happy with pretty much what ever you get.
Most fans are like most of the SEC when it comes basketball. They are happy with the occasional "bowl" season. It has never sustained itself because there is no pressure or expectation to sustain it, thus it will never change until that mentality no longer exists.

I might buy into that if only we had a qb who showed promise of being a legit div 1 qb.
We have performed well given the fact Mr. Johnson came to UK as a back up insurance to Mr. Barker. Unless catastrophe occurs, a very good Gunnar Hoak will be a redshirt freshman QB next season. He has a great future. The QB recruits coming as freshmen are as good as any quality college program could have.

Knock yourself out dude. If you want, have your expectations raised to 12-0 during regular season. If you don't get your way, then what? You going to Fire Stoops? Mitch? You going to take over the team. I expect to win every game, but alas I don't always get my expectations.

I can already see the "we're starting a freshman quarterback" excuse coming next season.

Our success with qb's the past few years has made me skeptical of any praise i hear of the ones waiting in the wings.

You can have high expectations every year if you want to but you have to have the players to make those expectations realistic. Our defense has never been up to snuff to beat the best in the SEC so that is why we lose so much. So many people on these boards say fans dont have high expectations when in essence we really do but the talent is not there to make the expectations realistic..If we had had a quarterback this year that was good to really good, we would probably have a legit chance at an 8-4 record. Stoops needs to recruit his *** of for the d line from here on in and get these kids to play their asses off. That is how we can win.

I can't for the life of me figure out how so many of you guys keep dumping on Stephen Johnson. The dude has hit receivers dead on for two straight games only to be rewarded with butter-fingered mishaps.

That kid is the least of our problems (besides the RBs).

22 out of 49 the last two games, so receivers dropped 27 passes???

When we have talent that approaches UT/UF/UGA (underachieved but talented).

We've beaten all of the lower level SEC teams this season. We barely have a senior class. We haven't gone backwards in win totals since Stoops arrived after recovering from have FBS talent on the squad. Our depth isn't anything special still. We've made due with a JUCO QB after Barker went down. At the start of the season the only loss that would have been considered surprising is Southern Miss. Do we have a single player who redshirted and is a junior/senior? Looking down the roster I see one RS Sophomore who has yet to even contribute.

Considering how well we've done since Southern Miss, I'll take the 6-6 bowl year. Was anyone on this board that is calling for Stoops' head now truly under the impression that we'd do a lot better than this in year 4?
