Was it before, during, or after the NCAA Tourney? If we are going to change coaches, im wondering when we could expect an announcement? Tom Cream was axed the day after his last game, so does the silence mean Collins is coming back?

He was fired on the Saturday of the Big Ten Tournament, so... today.

Yup. And Bruce Weber resigned (retired?) on Friday. Seems like non-tournament teams who are going to make a move are doing it this weekend. It doesn’t seem like NU’s style to distract from Selection Sunday and there is no chance of NIT, so they’re not waiting for that either. I guess Collins is safe.

No surprise. This is Northwestern. We don’t care enough as an institution to make such a bold move.

You’ve also heard from official sources at Nebraska and Georgetown stating they are giving it one more year.

If you’re not even considering it, there is no need to make an announcement like that.

I live in Oakland and remember Martin's time at Cal. Great coach and could be a game-changing choice for NU if the decision is made quickly to part ways with CC. Jaylen Brown, who was a great student as well, could have gone anywhere and came to Cal to play for CM. Martin is a midwest guy--never really liked or adjusted to CA. Why not Evanston! He chose to leave Cal when the Mizzou job became available and they are idiots for firing him.

Mizzou fans definitely believe their tradition, place in the pecking order, and ultimate upside are way better than they actually are. By a lot.

The AD at Pitt also had a statement. I believe Capel was under a similar amount of scrutiny to Collins.

I think it demonstrates a level of deafness if NU doesn't make some statement. But it's not the first time.

OTOH, maybe there's some ridiculous fine-print rule about the NIT or CBI that NU is waiting on to see if there's a bid. I'm just guessing. Lord help us if that's a deciding factor.

If nothing is said it means they are OK with the current state. Not a great look.

Yes. Might not be the first time, but it’s another demonstration of really not caring much about fans. Not exactly shocking.

Yup. And part of the problem is that he doesn’t even feel the need to say something because in their minds Collins probably isn’t even on the hot seat. Since we lost Teddy, we don’t have anyone asking tough questions about NU or covering NU Sports in the mainstream media. We have a tiny fan base and we get zero attention on local sports radio. If it weren’t for Lou V, no one would be covering the the NU coaching “situation.” We may have reached peak irrelevance. There are a few dozen die hards on this board, so unless Gragg wants to give Lou an exclusive, there’s no point in him issuing a statement. Ugh

Amazing how just five years ago, it felt like we were witnessing a new dawn of Northwestern athletics. And now, here we are in times as dark as any in the past 15+ years.

Everything I have read/heard about Gragg is he is an introvert. That comes from the Tulsa board and others I know close to the athletic department. I am not sure that this has even crossed his mind as a good idea. But you are right, this is the epitome of being irrelevant. Just think, a few years ago we acted like an actual D1 athletic department.

That is all true, to the point that it’s possible they don’t see CC as being on the hot seat. However I find it impossible they do not know there’s speculation . For as minuscule it might be compared to other programs it’s impossible they don’t know it exists.

It shows up in some mainstream media cranking out lists of coaches on hot seats. I am sure it shows up in the social media official channels. If they did not see it then they should all be fired as they would be doing nothing but collecting a paycheck.

The truth as I see it is that the only reality that matters is inside the university walls. The outside reality, as lived by the tiny fan base, is not worthy of attention and nurturing.

I am probably being too emotional here, but it just goes along with the elitist attitude we display in so many examples.

Pound the rock.

The only speculation about CCC's status has been from some people on this board. He's got one more year to try and get things right unless there is a mass exodus from the team. Carmody was fired with one year left on his deal and Collins will be in the same position next year. How does it help to have the AD react to the situation when Collins needs to recruit some good players in portal? How about bringing back Pat Baldwin St. and having his son come along? One can dream....

At this point, the only guys we are going to get off the transfer portal are guys who value that Northwestern degree and/or really want to play basketball in the Big Ten.

The word is out about the actual program, so these potential transfers will have already concluded "I don't care how bad it is... I want that diploma."

Yet this is so wrong. While the future is certainly unclear, we just had the fourth best season in our entire program history when you look at our team competitiveness.

Stop buying tickets. Encourage your NU students kids to stay home and study during games. Or better yet, run around on the football field during a game to protest :)

Either post season doesn’t matter so screw the ncaa appearance on CcC resume or post season matters and cCC can’t even achieve nit once. So fourth best, that requires some real purple colored glasses.

No worries. Let’s see who remains on the roster by end of summer. Then you can explain how all the departing talent was worse than the walk on level replacement talent. And next year, perhaps you will be forced to talk about graduation rates, if anyone is even interested anymore in MBB.

This is Collins' greatest sin. He took one of the single greatest moments in Northwestern history, something that generated an endless supply of national attention and good will, and utterly squandered it. To us, the NCAA bid is still a big deal. To the rest of the world? Completely meaningless. Didn't matter. It's as though we never made the tournament in the first place - except now if we ever do it again we won't get any attention for it. But, you know, we got to 7 conference wins this year, so, uh, progress.

It has been downhill ever since that Collins on Gonzaga went up thru the net to block a shot and our Collins ran on the court to get teed up.

I still recall the TV analyst, for some reason I think it was Bill Raftery, saying "No matter what happens, you cannot do that to your team."

Postgame interviews...

Chris Collins: "For me I just reacted to what I saw. I wasn't trying to yell at them or anything. I saw a blatant goaltend and I got excited about it and obviously it was a big play in the game."
ESPN reporter: "Do you think it (your technical) had any bearing on the outcome of the game? Did it make e a difference?"
Chris Collins: "Umm, I just believe in my heart, I think if we score that we cut it to 3 and there was still 4 minutes to go, but we had so much momentum.... if that is called correctly, we have a great chance to win."

ESPN reporter: "I'm curious, Did coach address you about his own technical?"
Sanjay Lumpkin: "No, uhh no he didn't... but none of us hold that against him... he was fighting for us and we know how he is and we still almost pulled it off"

Bryant McIntosh: "That was disappointing because we were still in the game, so, I mean I don't fault him for it, uh it was a missed call, so looking back I understand it, and he did, he lost his mind, but you can't fault him for it, it was just 'No, No, we're in the game don't don't ' "

There are a few plays that would have changed the trajectory of our program. That is one, the others are if Ryan Taylor hits that three against Michigan, and if Coble doesn’t quit.

Glenn Robinson, 1994. Who knows how different NU basketball would have been if they had won that game?
