When was the last time we saw Coack K play a junk defense?

Anyone here remember watching Valvano play box & one or triangle & two defense when they won the title?
I knew going into the USC game coach would want to stick with Duke's man to man and try to out physical the Gamecocks. When Kennard , Tatum and Jackson got 3 fouls in the first half I was hoping Coach would make some adjustments due to how the refs were calling the game.
I would have liked a zone or box & one with Vrank, Javin and White up front w Grayson & Matt in the backcourt. For 5-7 minutes I would have liked Duke to have used those guys to give fouls and hopefully draw fouls on USC. White would have face guarded star player for Gamecocks. May not have worked but it would have least given them a different look and saved Duke's energy for second half. Coach finally changed to a zone but starters were too spent by then.
Valvano used to do this frequently. It often worked to his advantage.
On another note would you say Javin is as good of a player as Jefferson was as a freshman?
I check stats and as a freshman Jefferson played 405 minutes or 12 per game and averaged 4 pts a game. Looks to me playing time helped his development. No reason not to play a few more of the players on the bench.

Maybe we should have come out in flip flops the second half? The distraction alone would have gotten us a few stops.

Kidding aside we got our butts whooped plain and simple. We struggled with man we struggled with zone. I'm not confident if they let us play with 6 guys our defense would have been much better.

As for Javin, who knows we saw very little of him this year. He looks athletic af and he looks to have a good motor, all of which is a good start. Does he have the skill to contribute, I'm hopeful but we'll see. I don't assume that anyone on our bench is the next coming of Lebron James like some on this board do but hopeful

I think far too much emphasis is placed on coaching during March Madness. Basketball, more than any other sport, is subject to roller coaster rides. Mediocre teams/players can suddenly get hot and score well above their average. When that happens, it's really hard to beat another team.

A lot of tourney success comes down to luck. Duke has lost plenty they should have won, while winning some they should have lost. Just the nature of a one and done format.

I enjoyed watching Valvano's teams play, and have an even greater appreciation of him now considering his courageous fight against cancer, and the bond he shared w/Coach K.

Coach V was very successful w/the junk defenses. One of the ones I remember most was his "1-3 and Chaser." One man out front, Three underneath, and a man on the other team's star player...They dont work for everybody, but sure contributed to his '83 title!

They should run the play that I ran coaching a bunch of six year olds. It was an inbounds play called "sleep". We would call the play and all the kids except one and the one throwing the ball in bounds would collapse to the floor. Needless to say, it left everyone, parents, refs, opposing players and coaches in shock at seeing 3 six year olds just collapse to the floor while running around to get open. Led to a wide open lay up. Didn't take long to quit working, but it sure was fun.

And to think, we thought we came up with an original play...but now that I think about it, I have not seen that playbook in a while. Of course this was the same season that I give this long impassioned speech before our first game with all these great going to war metaphors. This group of six year olds are staring at me wide eyed after this. A small hand is raised at the back of the group, and the question is asked to me..."Coach, what's a war?" All could say was, kids, go try your best.
