When we hired Rhule?

I would have preferred to see Nebraska grab Jim Leonhard. Some people would have screamed about hiring a guy that Wisconsin chose to pass on, but I'm willing to bet we would have seen a better product on the field than what we are now stuck with.

I think Rhule should consider hiring him for defensive coordinator..

If you can’t beat the Herkys, Minnesota and Wisconsin to keep your job you won’t be here that long, we’re on our 3rd coach that can’t beat these teams consistently.
If Rhule goes 7-5 8-4 and loses to those teams how many years before we move on from him, in your opinion. I’m curious. But we’ve got to stop with the contract extensions for only meeting the bare requirements. I see Florida is paying their new coach 7.5 mil plus “significant incentive” for playoff appearances. Someone finally doing it right .

I wanted Urban. He was practically publicly lobbying for the job when he was in Lincoln for the Fox broadcast too, so I thought we'd get him. No clue what happened or didn't happen there, but I sure wish we would have. Guessing Trev screwed that up too somehow.
I wanted Urban as well. And once again, our puritanical fanbase couldn't accept the very idea.

I wanted Klieman, who is apparently a packaged deal with the AD.

Despite the down year for him, I'm still confident he would be much better than Rhule.

Guy builds tough, confident teams. I'd still swap him for Rhule in a heartbeat.
Klieman isn't really a builder, he simply maintained a program that Bill Snyder had already built.

There are still some people on this board who think it’s logical to think we should be playing in the B1G title game every year.
Sure, but you/we aren't talking about those small handful of random message board posters.

I'm pretty certain your comment was made based off the core of the Husker fan base. Which again, currently doesn't have unreasonable expectations now, imo.

Bleeding heart apologists believe any expectations are completely unfair and unreasonable

This is the only answer

You have two choices, overpay for a proven winner or go cheap and keep hiring assistant coaches until you hit on the right one.

Instead we went the Riley route and overpaid for a retread
Yep...literally anyone would take the job for the right money. And at a school like Nebraska, there's no such thing as too expensive...the payback to bringing the program back would be extreme, including on the enrollment and PR side. It's insane to have such low expectations year in and year out. Frost was definitely a splash hire, everyone wanted him, but we should be doing that every time.

To me… It doesn’t matter about who was available and who was not available. You take the approach the volleyball team took. Look at what DBK did at Louisville from 2017 to 2024. That is who you want. The football team should’ve gone out for the most dominant freaking coach available at another school and just shot their shot and tried to get him here. That’s how IU found Ciggy. Instead we hire career 500 guys or turnaround guys blah blah blah. We need to drop the money and go out and get the best person available. And I seriously hope HCMR is considering that when he makes his changes in the off-season. Get some people here that are part of freaking dominant winners.

Completely agree. He’s already won a championship at Kansas State. He would be a great hire.

Who was available that would have taken the job? I’ve got nothin. I said then I would have been fine with Vigen from Montana State. Former NDSU assistant who coached for Bohl who has done a very good job. That said, I don’t remember guys like Brian Kelly being available. The only big name was the Doofus Wisconsin coach who I REALLY DID NOT WANT.
Can you imagine the fan base if cignette was a finalist for the Nebraska job? Everyone including Kong would have been outraged.

And in spite of it all, it would've been the right decision.

But no, the shitbirds that run our AD fouled yet another one off their collective nutsack.

I wanted Lance Leiopold because he would bring a decent staff plus his QB and RB would have transferred here and they were really good. They had an exciting offense at the time too.

I’m not sure if Lance would have been much better than 7 games a year but couldn’t be worse than Rhule.

Might be right. Tough to hire a coordinator from a program that fired their head coach.

How much is the “right money”? Maybe Urban bites for 15M/year?

DBK is an alum who had an out in her contract for Nebraska. TOTALLY different situation. Volleyball is a perennial power. Football had 7 losing seasons in a row and ZERO legacy coaches winning at P5 programs.

For sure. Every situation is different and I know DBK is unique. I’m only saying that I would like to see Nebraska go after coaches who have been completely dominant at their levels or with their other teams. Similar to the North Dakota State coach (at Kansas State now, his name is not coming to me), or Ciggy. It seems like we never really go for those types of coaches in football. And I’m not saying Scott because he only had one good year.

Then those boosters are fools. He’s wildly exceeding expectations at Iowa State
Good coach who does some wildly stupid things sometimes in games. IF he was what we think he is, he would be in the SEC or B1G by now. He’s getting passed over for coordinators and a disgraced former Northwestern coach. I know just enough to suspect there must be something about him scaring ADs away.

Haven't you heard? He loves it where he is and has no interest in being promoted to a better job. That's what his supporters tell me anyway.

Yes maybe, Nebraska paying 15 million a year for football success is much cheaper than constantly firing coaches with 40+ million buyouts. If we pay a lot up front, but actually get results, it might be worth 50-100 times what we pay.

Honestly at this point Nebraska needs to play in the not splashy but hard working youngish coach. Give me a coach with strong lines and a desire to prove himself. I'd be looking for HCs in the big XII or even g5.

Or coordinators in the BIG.

Can we combine all the Urban Meyer and Warren Buffet fantasies into one thread in the future? You know, for the sake of efficiency. We can work on the title, but I'll just throw out my suggestion of "Schitt that will never happen."
