Where does any optimism come from for the 2022 season?

I think that to consistently beat good teams, you have to be able to get to 30 points, or have great defense. This team has had neither of those abilities. I want to be optimistic, because I’m a die hard for 39 years. In 2019, it was miserable, but they were at least a couple games that I thought they had a legit chance to win. I didn’t have that thought in any game after Rutgers this year.

We had the ball with a chance to take the lead over Iowa at the end of the game. Yes, we threw an interception on the first play of the drive, but we were definitely in that game at the end.

I think wrassler should offer the coaches and the team a few rounds of Emotional Core Therapy.

We have one chance. Go all in on transfers and get a new DC and OC. That's it.

Chances of any one of those three happening are pretty slim

Our only chance is against teams whose offenses are almost as inept as ours. We aren't going to score 20, and so the only hope is to get a few lucky breaks and hope that our inept offense is a bit less inept than the other side's.

It's usually when I am my least optimistic that team generally plays its best. Which makes me optimistic. Which means they'll suck.

Yep. Rebuilding from a cratered season like this seems nigh impossible.
It's likely going to take some big moves that give recruits and players confidence this team is on the upswing. Without those, I don't see anything other than a very slow slog.

I don't know what to think. We've gone from first to last to first to last in the division. It was hard to see any chance of a turn around after 2019, but we at least were getting a new OC after that season. I doubt we'll see any new coaches next year.

My hope is a big upgrade from the transfer portal and Jim O'Neil settling in after some first year jitters. It's also possible that there are some redshirt-freshman types who should've been playing this year and will get their shot next year.

It's also possible that next year really is a youth movement to set up the following year. It can be fun following a young team even if they aren't winning the division. This year's team has way more veterans than anybody wants to admit.

2019 going into 2020 we still had Hank and then we got a proven highly productive B1G QB transfer. We now have no sign of a proven productive QB for next year, we don’t have Hank and our lines on both sides seem really weak.

Until this year, and for years now, the offense has been buoyed up by the defense, except 2019, when the offense was so bad (see 2019 QB performance), no amount of Hank could keep it afloat. So why the surprise when the bottom drops out of the defense, that the offense tanks also--it had been tanking for years, except for CT and a couple of previous QBs and JJTBC. Repair the defensive gash below the waterline (only one way to do that as far as I can see) and we will see the beginnings of a turn around, for the offense as well. For a coach with Fitz's reputation, clout and experience this should be a no-brainer and QED. even by next year. Why wait yet another year to see if what has not been working will suddenly work? I would give Jake the benefit of the doubt for the time being, since he has one big offensive CF to repair.

The only optimism that I see is putting chips on Porter. Not sure we can be optimistic on Hilniski. He doesnt have it. Period.
Optimism starts at winning 2 bigten games. Hopefully Rutgers is on the schedule. We slipped so bad that we cant count on illini.

I'd be all over the portal. Don't have a lot of confidence in the returning guys, and there is no guarantee we will retain our best returnees anyway. I get that it's a bit of a rummage sale, but, to me anyway, it's easier than guessing on recruits.

I forgot about the portal. Good point. I hope we hang on to our left tackle. Portal swings both ways and players are like the fans, ie., they arent dumb. Aint nobody wants to put in the hard work then Fitz backs suck coaches.

I'm concerned about losing any talent, but particularly Brandon Joseph. If he and the team had a year like last year, he'd be a first day pick, possibly the first safety chosen. And - despite some rough patches this year, he is a brilliantly talented athlete. He could still declare for the draft, but he probably needs a year to rehabilitate his reputation. I believe that makes him a flight risk.

Its reasonable to conclude that Joseph is gone. Makes zero sense for him to stay when top programs will pursue him.

The recruiting has been absolutely terrible. And the lack of direction and awful coordinators blew up this years class as few will join with JON.
The 90s and 2000s =
Barnett/walker, championships, $80,000 asst coach salaries, solid recruiting, mud practice field.

Post hank will offer
Mr Fitzgerald (bob davie .5) best practice facility, weight room, lockers in the nation, 3rd best salary in the Big, awful recruiting. #14 bottom of bigten.

Worse part is if you look at the data and players and coaches....there is no way out.

I don't think he's 3rd in salary anymore with MSU and PSU extensions, but I get it. I think we'll know by the end of the year if any changes. Hold the recruit commits and fire JON. Replace with one of the HC's that don't get snagged - Mullen, Patterson, etc.

Doesn't change the recruiting - which people say every year is our best class ever and never almost never is.

Short term, NU can't find optimism with a telescope. We're going to have to watch at least one more season like this one next season. Fitz is so secure we might have to watch one more after that. If it's up to Fitz, we might have to watch one more after that. If it's still up to Fitz, we might have to watch one more after that.

Coach Fitz has had great success and all the fans love him for everything he's done for NU, both as a player and a coach. But the recent past shows he has a fatal weakness in recruiting assistant coaches. These decisions are sinking NU football like a stone. Neither the OC nor the DC are elite and they need to be.

Since NU loves Fitz, at last they will kick him upstairs, out of the HC position, hire a new HC and hope for the best. That's gonna take years to happen.

It would be better for NU, Fitz and NU football if our fire-breathing AD called Fitz into his office today and said, "I want to save you from yourself. You've made some poor decisions in recruiting your OC and DC. Fire them both today and together, with the best advisors we can find, we'll try to find more capable coaches." There. Took some serious imagining, but I found the missing optimism.

What actually has Fitz done? Nothing he did was original. Only thing he has done is exploited Hankwitz for personal gain and taken credit for some convenient wins. Off the field, his recruiting is awful but he blamed facilities and low coaching salaries.

So they bite on dropping $600 million on football facilities, and pay his coordinators close to $500,000. Then he hired his buddy.

Cant beat osu. Get clobbered by hairball all the time. Downward slopes against psu.

I am getting the impression that Fitz doesn't want to be possibly be upstaged by some hot commodity OC or even DC, thus he hires guys he knows somehow from NU, or average assistants from elsewhere. Ayeni and Macpherson are the only decent ones he has on his staff. Bajakian isn't that bad, but he has no line or real TEs to work with, so he will never pan out with his system. We are still woefully inadequate at WR and that is on the system for the most part. Fitz needs to have a future plan for the program. Was he serious about contending for the BIG every year and reaching the playoff even? If he was, things need to drastically change. EMU can beat the Cats now.

Sacrilege! Watch out or the board bullies will get you for questioning our leaders.
Most likely, joseph transfers. Hopefully, our stud OT decides to stay. Our recruiting has been awful so there isnt any way out. Since Ned confirmed that JON is staying, I wonder how many more years until we get our next 4 star recruit on defense?

Fans wanna know.
