29 - Airedale

They're damn smart. I'd argue that they should be above some of the others.

Right now, #17 German Shorthaired Pointer.

Grew up with Border Collies.......no doubt why they're #1 on the list.

Had a Boxer and have been around a bunch of Boxers........They're very intelligent and obedient.....should be much, much higher on the list. Though it's a very unhealthy breed......very sad.

I've had a bunch of exposure to Goldies, Poodles, Springers, Labs, Cockers, Min Schnauzer, Weimars, German Shepherds....all quite intelligent.

Been around a bunch of Pit Bulls......my goodness do they serve a singular purpose.....

42. Australian Shepherd.

This list is bogus. Aussies are regularly a top 15 smartest dog breed in just about any list.

I agree! I had one and he seemed quite smart to me. Followed commands immediately. Learned rules of the house quickly. Eager to learn tricks. Bonded with each family member. Smartest dog I’ve ever been around. Or, maybe I’m prejudiced since I loved him so.

a friend of mine had to give away one of their dogs recently. When they adopted it they were told it was a pure Pit. Turns out it was a pit bull / st bernard :weary:

Have a 12 year old whippet/pit/mountain curr(what she looks like) mix that's not the sharpest...however, she is very obedient. Walk anywhere without a leash and she will stay beside me...unless its the middle of May until late July.

49 but she’s cute.

And a 14.5 mix. She’s a-ight. I think we got a dumb one, or mixing breeds makes them not as smart.

The wife and I have had Papillons since we were married. We had to put 2 down early last year, and we just got 2 litter mates back in December.

#4 Golden Retriever: great dogs, never met one that wasn't awesome, I always recommend them for anyone wanting a dog for a family

#35 Irish Setter: my wife adopted her from a guy who was just leaving her outside and forgetting to feed her, she seems really smart and is a big time talker, she's a bit of a spazz still at 10 years old and she has a ton of energy, she would probably have been a handful to train

Ok without worrying about another list.

Chows are always near the bottom of these lists. These lists are basically how trainable a dog is. If humans disappeared which dogs survive? Border Collies or Chows? Studies on feral dogs in the USA found them to have a large amount of DNA from three breeds. Chows, Huskies and Pit Bulls. Two of those are getting by on brains as they are closest to wolves. One on sheer power.

I have a lab and a Pyreneese AS mix. My lab is about 1/3 as smart as the chows I had. They could break out of Alcatraz.

There is a Border Collie in Germany that knows maybe 400 words in German. Very impressive as English should be her native language.

Could also be that only inbred Hicks get chows, huskies and pits, and therefore a hell of a lot more of them were let go into the wild where they become feral.

There is also a border collie that knows the name of 1000 of his toys.

I’ve always wanted one. I think my old dead dog was an Aussie/Border Mix. She was the smartest dog I’ve owned.

I’ve been looking on Craigslist when bored but I don’t trust Craigslist and I know I’m a little too busy for the time needed. My Aussie probably wouldn’t do well with a pup either. She is very alpha. I can’t get her to herd the chickens though. She wants nothing to do with them

Uh no.

Pits yes. The other two are relatively small population that tend to survive when released. Again these two breeds are the closest to the wolf.

47ish - Havanese mix mutt we got as an older dog from the humane society. Smart? I don't know... but he's an awesome dog.

27 - Yorkshire terrier that walked up to me as a puppy in Eastern Ky covered in ticks, matted hair and really malnourished. I couldn't just walk away from him. He can be a jerk and has taken a lot to train but seeing what he came from I think he's pretty great.

I had two Dobes, a blue and a fawn. The blue looked like Batman and was a reincarnation of Dino. Lol.

The fawn came from a breeder / trainer at about 18 months old. He had trained her but I think she was a bit gun shy for lack of a better term.

She was scary smart, attentive and quiet. When someone would knock at the door she would get between the door and our daughter. I actually only saw her bark / growl a couple of times. I still don’t know what put her on alert, but she was all business.

She would have been the one to show a burglar where the good china was. Then eat him when he tried to leave.

I miss them both.

Had Golden’s my whole life but I was overridden on the latest addition and got a golden doodle. Very smart dog. Maybe not the most manly looking creature but he’s a good boy.

1 and 10, according to our vet, the person who gave us the puppy, and Wisdom Panel. We were gifted a puppy that was supposed to be a Hangin Tree Cowdog per the person who gave her to us, and we decided to try a dog DNA test to figure her out.

Wisdom panel gave us a mostly generic response, but that might have had something to do with the fact that swabbing her cheeks for 30 seconds had the same odds of success as giving a backrub to a honeybadger.

Wisdom Panel came back with :

25% Border Collie
25% Russell Terrier
12.5% Collie
37.5% Breed Group(s)
● Herding
● Guard
● Terrier
● Companion

She has the border collie markings, but also has a short, dense coat. Our vet thinks she has a big % of Blue Heeler or Aussie in her mix, and the breeds listed in the 37.5 portion include the Aussie and Heeler, so it seems legit.

Awesome dog, and smart AF, but also stubborn as hell. Breed info is probably pretty close even if she isn't a "real" Hangin Tree dog. We just assume there is Chupacabra DNA in there and roll with it.

My Border Collie mix can be very stubborn. Must be a trait of the breed.
