Consolations have matches for 3rd place, 5th place, and 7th place, with the winner taking the place, and the loser taking one less.
I got kicked around for predicting 10 AAs last week. Although I did think we'd have 4 or 5 champs. I fk'd up by sticking with the norms.
When Minnesota did it, they had 3 3rds, 3 4ths, 1 5th, 1 6th and 2 8ths.
I’m not suggesting that Cael is on the hot seat, but to have as many as 8 wrestlers ranked in the top two of their weight class at different times this year, and only get 3 to the finals is dissapointing.
Greg, you mentioned in your summary article how maybe this wasn’t the super team many expected. Well this shows us just how spoiled we are. This is probably the greatest team ever assembled with ten All Americans and the all time scoring record. We may be a little disappointed we only had two champs but wow 8 of 10 in top 3!!! We have entered a new age in sports where all the top teams can buy wrestlers making it much more competitive at least for programs who have the bucks. Yet this team still won by 60 points while setting an all time record. How long before this record is ever approached by another team. This team was indeed the super team we all expected this year. The last consi round was unbelievable with not only winning but scoring bonus. Only a super team could finish like that.
Pssh- we smashed that lame MN outcome. The team is young and in one of those wrestler- leadership transition periods, but it is in superb hands with: Levi, Messenbrink, Barr, Kasak, etc. who would not want to be on a team with them?!?!
I never ceased to be amazed by the composure, maturity, poise, and public speaking of Messenbrink. He’s going to be very successful in life, however he wants to define that. Equal for Levi H.
I turned out ok but If I think of myself being on the stage they are at that same age and how I would appear/be judged by the media, not many would have bet on my success. They are kicked off with an amazing ”front front” on life prob due to good parental mgmt and Cael and the PSU coaches. Certainly I’d rather have the Penn St coaches (all of them) molding my child than ANY other coaching group.
