Personal choice. BYU as a team doesn't play on Sundays due to it being the Sabbath for Christianity.

You forget how very American-centric people are in this country, especially on things like faith. Very few people ever take the opportunity to learn even the basics of another person's faith.
Not sure the year has anything to do with religion. Most do not change due to the date.
Have you ever watched the movie; "Chariots of Fire?" It is all about a Christian (not a Mormon) who would not run in the Olympics on Sunday because it was the Sabbath day. It is a true story. The point is that it isn't just for Jews.
And for those of you who are not aware, Chic-fil-A closes on Sunday, which is a BIG day for restaurants because of their Christian faith.
Finally, I go to a Presbyterian Church which subscribes to the Westminister Confession, which has a LOT to say about the Sabbath day and has some fairly strict teachings on abstaining from recreation, etc. on Sunday.

So religions haven’t advanced over the years? I have a hard time believing that.
Brings back memories of Sandy Koufax refusing to pitch in game one of the 1965 World Series because it fell on a Jewish holiday. For you younger ones Koufax was arguably the greatest left handed pitcher in MLB history. His four year run from 63 through 66 was unsurpassed. Sadly he retired at his peak at age 30 from lingering arm issues.
If Chandler plays half as well as some of you think he is, we should dominate today, just saying.

We are not Mormon but my son doesn't play in games on Sundays if he has to miss church. I don't hold others to my convictions but I have to answer to God for what I do or don't do and for how I direct my household. I have no problem with Chandler ( or anyone) if he doesn't play on Sunday. I wish more people would hold to their Biblical convictions.
Christianity is today as it was at the time of Jesus. You have all kinds of churches that are misleading people when we talk about religion evolving. Any religion that evolves is not true. You have many wolves in sheeps clothing that are misleading people each and every day. Same for the worlds other religions. Point blank plain and simple.
The problem is Christianity in America has become very......nationalized. Not saying that honoring your country is bad (I love my country and think it's important to thank God for our blessings), but it does seem like in a lot of churches these days, politics reign, and that goes for both sides of the aisle. I mean, there are mega churches that throw 4th of July celebrations that would make D.C. blush. I remember seeing one mega church post a video online with a national celebration that included a mock tank being rolled out to fireworks. Like, that's a bit much don't you think? Not sure Jesus would like his Father's house being used to promote war machines. But that's just me.
Fair enough. I kind of struggle to balance BYU paying some dude millions to coach and play basketball, but also not being able to do it on a Sunday based on some principle that is a thousand or so years old. Seems a little picky and choosey to me.
Since BYU is from the founder of the religion (Taking Christianity and adding a book that is not part of the bible but is also taught), is the religion then they have to have some guidelines that cannot be crossed. But I would also expect the NCAA if there is a Muslim, Scientology, Buddhist or other religion that has a guideline, that they would respect it equally. Me being a Christian and if I think those other religions are misleading has no place in something like these public institutions rules, what is good for one has to be followed by others. I try to live by the golden rules taught by Jesus but also try to follow the word of the BIBLE. Not being a bible scholar, it is up to me before I try to understand the word I have to go to the Lord and ask for him to give Devine intervention to give me understanding of His word. I do not try to put my view on His word to others as I could be one misleading. I tell people to look for spiritual help and go to the Lord as well. Anyway we too long with this. Sorry.
