Notre Dame has always said that there were only two things that would force them to join a conference - media outlet for their home games plus access to the playoffs.
Money has never really been a concern until the recent projections on the per team payouts coming to Big10 and SEC teams. Last season, Notre Dame received $22 million from NBC (those $15 million reports are wrong. That was the original amount, but the contract had escalator clauses) + $10.8 million from the ACC for their share of basketball credits, bowls, etc. + $3.2 million from the college football playoff payout to ND annually = $36 million.
While this payout was smaller than the per team payouts to other Power-5 teams, it was manageable. Always keep in mind that ND has never been extravagant when it comes to their athletic department. Players do not stay in luxurious athletic dorms - they stay in the same dorms that the regular students stay in. I would describe the Notre Dame athletic facilities as being in the middle of the pack for Power-5 teams.
But when you talk about a gap of payouts between $36 million and the projected Big10 and SEC payouts of between $80-$100 million, you are now talking about a serious gap that might not be manageable. Thus ND wanting $75 million for their next television deal.
Also, there are some who feel the decision for Notre Dame and Stanford to join the Big10 has already been made behind closed doors. This story of ND wanting $75 million was leaked so that when ND fails to get that amount, Swarbrick can appease disgruntled alumni by being able to say "Gee guys, we tried."
