I like whiskey but haven't ventured out much. I usually go with a pretty basic Maker's Mark or Michter's. The last bottle I bought was a Colonel EH Taylor and I liked it.

What's another good, basic whiskey I can go out and get in most Oklahoma liquor stores for $30-70? Would like to try something new. I tend to like sweet so I mainly get bourbons.

One of the Col. EH Taylor whiskys recently was named Jim Murray's (whisky Bible) 2018 whisky of the year.

In that price range:

• Redbreast Irish (12)
  
• Blanton's Bourbon
• The Balvenie Double Wood Single Malt

All of those are going to run $50-60 at a good store with reasonable prices.

Yes on common. But, there has been a shortage of the Blanton's in the past few months, but I believe that has eased up now. I bought the bottle I now have back last spring and I had to ask the lady at the store if she had any; she brought out the bottle I now have and said it was the last one she had. Like I said, I believe the situation has improved now.

When I first "discovered" the Rebreast maybe 5-6 years ago you could get a standard bottle for $40-42. It now goes for about $55-56 most places.

I think this is pretty common with plenty of Whiskeys.

Just bought a bottle of Ardbeg Corryvreckan .. numerous whiskey drinking buddies have tasted it and a couple get something completely different than the rest.

I bought the flagship Ardbeg last Christmas because they had a Christmas gift set with a couple of neat little scotch glasses (they were smaller than I thought at first) and because I wanted to try something with heavy peat. Stuff tastes like Campho-Phenique to me; I'm dead serious.

Pappy is my unicorn and have yet to see it anywhere but I did get this close relative this weekend and it does not disappoint. I have been looking for this for a while and just lucked into being at the right store at the right time.

Just had this with dinner.

If you're in Ft Worth or north Texas check out Acre distillery Long Hair Jim. Acre has a tasting room in Ft Worth. It's been my go to bourbon the last few months. Fantastic.

I was in Austin visiting some clients last night. Went to a restaurant/bar that had a nice whiskey selection. Tried some Balcones from Waco. It was ok. I enjoyed the Blanton's much better as I have a tough time finding that.

They did have Weller 12 there. I regret not trying that instead of the Balcones.

I'll add that apparently just about everyone has caught on that Weller 12 is a bargain at retail and the watering houses are making a killing.

Yesterday at two different Lexington establishments, it was $27 for a 2.5oz pour and $20 for a 1.5oz pour. 4oz for more than the retail price of a 750mL bottle. It's great, but wow. One restaurant manager said it was the second most sought after bourbon in town after pappy's.
