The tough part of the Solich firing was timing. Nebraska had only the great Tom Osborne era as a benchmark. They had no idea that the explosion of scholarship parity and re-emergence of high level football at USC, Stanford, and Oregon would doom what had been a successful west coast recruiting formula for decades.
It’s easy in hindsight. At the time, 3-loss seasons felt awful compared to the 70s through 90s. I don’t think many of us would have predicted perennial losing seasons after Solich and Pellini.
The other part of this is recruiting. I’ve heard people talk about it on TV and on XM. When Nebraska broke awake from the Big 8 and came to the B1G they alienated their own recruiting footprint. The kids they were getting from CA, OK, and TX didn’t want to play in the B1G. They haven’t recovered completely from that.
People who are so eager to get rid of Franklin should think about this. PSU could easily become the next Nebraska. A lot of people want a “PSU guy” just like NU got their Nebraska guy. How’s that working for them?
It will be interesting to watch what Kansas does this season. With any modicum of success, I can see LL ending up somewhere in the B1G.
IMO, Nebraska, this year has been “portalized”. 15 transfers this year with many starting. How does that translate or work with the players that had been there. It caused Martinez to go bye bye. They ate the poison portal apple. They couldn’t do much in the second half at all.
Don't get me wrong, I dislike Nebraska. But I know another program that's falling into this category.
It’s a fair point. Though, it’s TBD what direction PSU is headed with Franklin. Coach just signed a 10-year contract. He’s not going anywhere for at least 5 years.
People can whine all they want. We’ll see where this ship sails with him. He will have had 14 years as head coach by that point. That’s hardly being run off too early.
If you’re not competing in the CFP then 4-8 is the same as 8-4. It doesn’t matter. You make the same amount of money but maybe play in a better bowl game. You still have nothing substantive to show recruits. But if you are serious about winning, you keep trying to get better. That means firing coaches who are aren’t performing - like Franklin.
OB would love dealing with the alums etc at Nebraska. Remember Pelini's leaked tape recording? That would be vintage BOB.

Nebraska's root problem is their recruiting base. They only have 1.9 million people in the state and if you look at their 300 to 400 mile radius for HS football, it;s really weak. Coaches that excel - and depend on - strong recruiting (like Urban Meyer) would not even consider them
Osborne’s success seemed to stem from three areas:
1. being able to stash away developmental walk-ons who contributed as Jrs and Srs (make PED comments here)
2. Recruiting west coast JUCO kids with issues who couldn’t get into top schools out of HS. This radically changed in the 00s with USC and Oregon re-emerging. Top kids went there.
3. An easy Big 8/12 schedule that really only had Oklahoma with a pulse most years. Colorado and UT bobbed up and down in the 80s and 90s.
Once 1 and 2 dried up, they were toast. I suspect Osborne saw this coming and that factored into him stepping down.
They recruited Florida well too (Tommy Frazier) and used to be able to haul elite talent at RB (Green, Phillips, Rozier, Craig) - I remember them beating us out for DeAngelo Evans who was hampered by injury (but still beat Barry Sanders HS rushing record in Kansas).
With the watering down of the Pac - USC & UCLA along with OU & UT going to the SEC the coach or new coach will have to recruit the Rockies and Texas.
Scott Frost made a bad game decision with the onside kick, same as Franklin with his running play against OSU. The redemption for SF is to beat OU and win the Big West otherwise the Huskers will go into the death spiral.

Frost's buyout goes from 15mil to 7 mil after Oct 1. For anyone betting over/under on firing date.

I’m on the fence about this. They brought Frost back on the hottest of seats. He needed 9-10 wins this year to stay on.
That was a huge distraction all off-season and will continue through the season. It unsettles recruits, etc.
Firing him mid season doesn’t prevent any of that. It’s already too late, so at this point, you let him coach out the chain and fire him at Thanksgiving.
I’m sure Albert is in touch with many agents and has been for the past year. He knew what a Hail Mary it was for Frost to turn this around in 2022.
Agree, but my thinking is that if your not sure what to do about your HC that is 15-30....it really shouldn't be that hard a decision.
I think it’s being mainly driven by Frost’s status as a beloved alum. That’s why I think he gets the benefit of coaching out the chain and then agreeing with Albert that it’s best to part ways.
It’s like the old adage about not doing business with family or good friends. It gets messy if things go south.
I doubt a firing gets Albert gets any further along in hiring the next coach than he already will be this fall.
