Who is our backup PG?

Anthony was never a walk-on...Pitino tried to sell him on it but Epps had a scholarship offer from UL and was prepared to accept that rather than walk-on. I believe this is the underlying reason for Rick's stubborness in trying not to hand the team to Anthony from the outset. He had to be seeing the same thing in practice that we could all see in the games: that team was a well oiled machine w/ AE at the helm.
Pitino ended up naming him “wine”, cause he got better with age.
He did eventually win Pitino over.

THIS was the exact type preseason talk and maybe the only concern with our 95-96 Cats too -

I remember Shep and Delk getting looks as PG's in there somewhere

Turner & Epps eventually settled in and tore it up

Anyone else remember that?
Remember it well. Pitino did the right thing to experiment with Delk since we added Mercer and Anderson. But it became obvious after losing to UMass that Delk was needed at the “2.” It meant Mercer had to come off the bench….but I’d say it worked out well for us in the end.

I trust the staff. But I hope they also see this as the potential weak link, and will be prepping guys like Jasper Johnson to potentially take lead guard if Lowe is injured (or, if Lowe isnt quite panning out). This is a title contending roster, last years was not, even when fully healthy.. we cant squander this opportunity by finishing the season without a PG.

Agree! The staff should quickly figure out who's going to be PG #2 (or #1 if he can beat out Lowe) and go with it.

Don't think I agree that this was the right thing to do. To me, it was Rick's "Cal moment": put the most talented 5 on the floor, regardless of fit. I can't see the wisdom of trying to make Delk and Shep play out of position (taking away from their strengths) with 2 natural point guards on the bench.

Realistically who is our backup point guard if Lowe is injured? Is it Chandler or JJ or Denzel?
My guess is Jasper Johnson as PG2 over Aberdeen (I agree with others that think he likely starts at 2G). But my guess on this is based on my perception that Johnson may have the superior handle. And actually, I have no real confidence in making that prediction. Even though I saw Aberdeen play many times last season, he just never stood out to me in regard to the PG position. Sure, I could see he was a good Guard in FL's rotation - but I never thought of him in regard to playing the Point specifically, just as a good Guard with length. I've watched Johnson more than Aberdeen and he has some of that shiftiness in his handle that I think is really good for a PG.

Probably some truth to this. Pitino wanted to show NBA scouts Delk could play point, or at least be a combo guard. Which is exactly what Cal would have done. Delk actually became an anomaly in the NBA, i.e., a 6-2 shooting guard. There weren’t many back in the day. David Wesley is the only other one from that era that I can remember off the top of my head.

It could be any of those three, depending on the game scenario. Chandler proved last year that he can play the backup PF role. Jasper can definitely play that role. I'm sure Aberdeen can too, but don't want to move Aberdeen off the wing. JMO.

Even Oweh can play the point but, again, don't want to move him off the wing.

Pitino did play with the lineup early on trying to find the right fit before settling in with Epps.

It was almost like he was trying not to play Epps

It was kind of weird in a way, how he tried everything conceivable to keep Epps off the floor, but Epps wouldn’t have it.
Yeah. Weird.

Like when Travis Ford was suspended for one game in 94. And instead of starting the backup point guard, he started 3rd team shooting guard Chris Harrison instead.

Or that Epps, who led the team in assists, did rightfully start 6 games in 1984-95 over Jeff Sheppard. But only in games that Mark Pope started over Andre Riddick. Never with Riddick, Delk, Rhodes, and Walter McCarty.

Weird.
