Who is the best high school football player you ever saw play in person while in high school?

The best I ever saw was Andy Headen from Eastern Randolph in N.C. He played QB in high school and I only saw him play in one game against Burlington Williams at East Randolph. Williams went on to win the 3A state championship that year. It is the most exciting high school football game I've ever seen. The final score was in the 50's for both teams and I'm not sure who won. Andy put on some kind of show that night both throwing and passing the ball. Wish I knew his total offensive output that night but it had to be 400 plus yds. Andy of course went on to play Clemson and the N.Y. Giants but not as a QB. OFC

I would like to recognize a good friend who passed away in 1998 son. Brandon Spoon. Yes the same Brandon Spoon who was a linebacker for unc cheater u . I watched Brandon play high school football for 4 years as a varsity player and he was outstanding. It broke my heart to see him commit to unc cheater u but even though I pulled for ABC I wanted Brandon to do well. His dad passed away while Brandon was still in college. Brandon was drafted by Buffalo as a linebacker and his rookie year he returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns. His dad would have been so proud. Brandon did not have a long career do to injuries but he got to play NFL football. OFC

I tried to tackle Antone Exum one year and hit his hip and went flying out of bounds. Those D1 kids were just built different.

I played pop warner football with Steve Griffin who would go on and play RB for Clemson in the early 80’s. I believe injuries kept him from going any further. I was QB and handing him the ball and watching what he was doing at a young age was amazing. Made my job easier lol.

Carlester Crumpler, running back. Dad took me to the East-West HS All-Star football game in 60s. Dont remember his stats that nite, but sure remember "Crump" was outstanding at ECU! Also enjoyed hearing him do commentary on the Pirate Network.

I remember him sky... heckuva player.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. I've lost four really good friends in my life... one was 31, one was 32, one was 42 and one was 46.
I know that pain all too well unfortunately.

Curtis Hunter played at our rival school (southern) and he was an absolute stud, his playing days at unc didn't pan out. I think because of injuries, but man he torched us every time we played. Also saw Avie Lester play, he also was very good high school player who's college career wasn't as stellar

Natrome Means from Central Cabarrus High School, or at the Shrine Bowl watching Albert Haynesworth from South Carolina.

A lot of good high school football players have come from AL Brown and Concord High.

Mike Morton, from AL Brown, was a stud too. Went on to unc and also played for the Rams when they won the Super Bowl. A really good guy that I got to know over this summer doing travel baseball. He played for Mack Brown, and said he could sell sun to the Arabs.

Curtis was indeed as you say a hs "stud" Tlass! Never saw him in hs, but injuries hindered him as you say in college. Curtis had problems w/Chuck Swenson (K's asst)from a recruiting standpoint, otherwise he may well have ended up at Duke. I know all Big 4 schools went after him HARD. I will never forget when he announced he was going to UNC. It was a press conference on radio live. Hunter was asked what he thought Dean was doing after learning of his decision to play at UNC:"Hes probably standing on his head now." Coached collegiately at NC A&T, and coaches now at HS level....OFC

Played against Olandis Gary. We beat them, but as a (at the time) OLB trying to read his cuts and chase his open field speed? Wasn’t fun. Mind you I ran 4.6 40 at 6’2, 210lbs and while not lightning speed, he left me a couple of times like I was sitting still.

Brad Evans, qb, Durham High. I believe he was a Parade All-American. During the late 60’s saw him play against Walter Williams High in Burlington, NC. Don’t remember to much about the game but he was smooth and obviously the best player on the field and won the game.

Was a two sport star. Duke won the recruiting battle for him and he played basketball at Duke. Played on the early 70’s teams who weren’t very good. Only game I saw him play in person he did score twenty points in a half against Penn State.

His senior season he did play football. As I recall he was a wide receiver.

In response to the Curtis Hunter reference, he was a top ten player sought by everyone. Cheats beat the Devils for him. Duke had to settle for a guy named David Henderson instead. Things worked out real well for David at Duke and Curtis was a bust with the Cheats.

Donnie Davis. QB Burlington Cummings High School. At one time I believe he held some national high school passing records. Went on to start for G.T. a couple of years. After college he played from he Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League and had good success there. The NFL just didn't pan out for him. OFC

Shawn Alexander. Insane high school stats, held a few records at Alabama, and won the MVP in the NFL.

Thanks for the Update Hart. Too bad about the problems with Swenson, would have loved to see him in a Duke Uni.

I played at Central Cabarrus before Means. AL Brown had two great one's in Ethan Horton (UNC/Raiders) and Lance Smith (LSU). Nick Maddox was also a heck of a running back from there that went to FSU.

I saw him play in college in the early '70s. I think i was visiting a friend at William and Mary and went to their game. If Crumpler was a rather tall long legged hard running guy who ran through people then he was the guy. I'm not sure I ever remember hearing about him after he graduated though.

I hope App whips him in Chapel Hole next month. I have some App friends going to that game, and I think there will be almost as many App fans there as Tar Hole fans.No argument on Mack The Knife as great recruiter I totally agree, but he was all in on the scandal with football during his FIRST TENURE at the school from Chapel Hill. OFC

Chuckie helped lead Mack to one of his infamous 1-10's, before Mack hooked on to Dean's AFAM scheme. Then Mack was able to get better players in with the 4th grade etc
level educations. OFC

Kentrell Jones. Gaffney HS QB Was Michael Vick before Michael Vick.

I was at this game and most of them that season.

Y’all may not believe it but mountain football isn’t usually too great lol honestly the best I ever saw in person is probably Zack Jaynes who went on to be the starting QB at western carolina and was a yr ahead of me in school.

Seen a lot of good ones. Went to high school with Darryl Nicholson that went to Carolina and started as a freshman beside Lawrence Taylor. Greensboro Page in early eighties had Todd Ellis QB Tripp Welborn receiver who was all American at Michigan. They ran the run and shoot offense and lit the scoreboard up.

Heath Schuler and Carl Pickens were two good ones from the mountains.
