Don't remember Lou playing offensive line. Could have, he played linebacker, tackle and some end on defense. Lou was a absolute headhunter and I heard Jonny Majors say "Lou Micheals is the only player I was scared of!"
I remember the game way back when he terrorized UT. Lou was mean as hell.

Dermontti is the answer IMO and talk about the classical case of being able to turn it on when he was on the field and be as nice of a person off the field as you will find. Hard to believe when you see him off the field he was that nasty on the field. "Ollie" Oliver Barnett was the same way.

Perhaps Art Still. Lined up along side Bryant whenever extra push needed. Just even better at DE so he played there.

I've heard a lot of great stories about Michaels, they said he single handedly beat UT one year.
I remember the game. it seemed like he did beat them by himself. I know he scared some of them to death.

I saw the game where he beat TU, Collier sent some tickets to our high school coach. To say the least he was the difference in the game, most dominant game by someone on D that I ever saw. He was all over the field, I saw him make one tackle on the opposite sideline for about a three yard gain when he was playing tackle. and he kicked the winning FG IIRC.

Majors might have been pretty smart, rumor is he was a very bad actor off the field, rumor was his older brother Walt that was playing for the Browns was supposed to have to come down occasionally and straighten him out, also a rumor in Corbin that he beat up a couple of players that came up to UK from their state champions and sent them packing. Calvin Bird was the big star on that team that came to UK the next year.

I've heard same about big brother Walt coming down to give Lou a azz kicking. I was a nose tackle, sometime line backer for my high school team and Lou was my idol. Dad of high school teammate took us to a UK basketball game and during half he introduced us to Lou. I remember he wasn't as big as I'd imagined but was very well put together!

Dermontti Dawson, Bob Gain, Warren Bryant, Sam Ball, and Jeff Van Note. - We've had some good ones! Go Cats!!

Good group and I'd add Bob Fry who played in the Gain era, Bob Talamani was All-Pro in the old AFL several years running, Cal Whithrow was a C with Green Bay and a UK AA as was C Irv Goode. Doug Davis was a #1 draft pick of the Vikes in the mid-'60s, Thom Dornebrook played for the Steelers in the early '70s. UK had good OLmen for decades then went on a long drought. Guys like Gary Williams and Larry Warford have started to change that. Hopefully we can add more to that list in the coming years.

Dude blared QMF all the time and also kept a pet snake....no one dared say anything to him....injuries really hampered him

Thanks for sharing and knew Mike was dinged up. It never knew it was that bad and saw him pretty much on a daily basis - just figured it was the usual hobble that comes from daily pounding. Having a line with him and Dermontti and Nord back in the day was one with some big boys.

We have really had some good O linemen. I am expecting the incoming class to add to that list. Go Cats!!

Why don't we all agree that it was Brad Myers back in the 80's....send a copy of the thread to him....and maybe he'll flip his son's commitment from Ohio State to UK. Would be an absolutely awesome OL (at least on paper) with Young and Jackson.

Lou Michaels played OL & DL ^and also punted, and kicked extra points and Field goals.

Here's the way I rate them as Offensivre Linemen.

1. Bob Gain won the Outland trophy

2. Warren Bryant All_American

3. Lou Michaels All American

4. Dermonte Dawson Hall of Fame but most of his reputation was as a pro.

5. Larry Warford

Will Grant was another good one. Played center for some good teams in Buffalo.

Great list. I remember them all! Thanks.
Feel that Drake Jackson and Landon Young barring injuries will join that list during their UK careers!

I want to toss in one more kudo for Sam Ball, and most of you old-timers like me prolly remember this but the young ones don't even know...Sam was a product of western Kentucky, grew up in Henderson KY down on the river and I never heard a single person say an unkind word about him....EVER. Matter of fact everybody in that town knew Sam Ball and was proud of him as a UK football player and a person. A young man, and this includes you Mr. Landon Young, could not do much better than to find out who Sam Ball is and was; and model his life after him. He was truly a great, big man in the annals of this Commonwealth's athletic history.
