** Update - TEAM 1999 added to the mix due to TEAM 2014 shutting out '13 & '15 **

Who wins this 3 on 3 tournament.. if they are at the skill level they were at, the beginning of their first season at Duke? (So judge Parker/Hood on their skill level in 2013, not on what they've did in the NBA)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
TEAM 2013
G - Matt Jones (6’5”)
F/G - Rodney Hood (6’8”)
F - Jabari Parker (6’8")
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
TEAM 2014
PG - Tyus Jones (6’1”)
F - Justise Winslow (6’6”)
C - Jahlil Okafor (6’11”)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
TEAM 2015
PG - Derryck Thornton (6’2”)
F/G - Brandon Ingram (6’9”)
F/C - Chase Jeter (6’10”)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
TEAM 1999
PG - Jayson Williams (6'2")
F/G - Mike Dunleavy (6'9")
C - Carlos Boozer (6'9")
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
TEAM 2013:
They don't have a PG, but they do have all 3 players with the ability to handle the ball decently enough and all 3 are capable of hitting the three. They don't have a Center either, but they have an average height equal or greater than the other 2 teams. They have 2 players capable of dropping 20ppg and the 1 player that isn't a 20ppg scorer is a very good defense player.

TEAM 2014: They don't have any knock down shooters, but if other teams try to shade a 2nd defender over to Okafor, then Jones & Winslow are capable of hitting open 3's - if other teams play Okafor 1on1 then he will dominate. They have a true Center, a Forward that can play big or small, and a true Point Guard, so they have no overlap at all on offense.

TEAM 2015: They are the weakest (strength) team of the 3, but also the fastest and most athletic. They don't have a real obvious weakness at any 1 position (i.e. Parker's defense, Okafor's jumper range) but I don't know if they have an obvious advantage at any 1 position either (i.e. Parker's versatility, Okafor's post-offense & size).

WINNER: *TEAM 2014*
In my opinion, Tyus is going to have a hard time keeping up with Thornton and a hard time scoring over Matt Jones. Winslow is going to be defended by players that are 2-3 inches taller than him and when he's on defense he's guarding the 2 deadliest 3pt shooters. Okafor is going to have a difficult time defensively running after Parker and Jeter.. BUT! Offensively, Okafor might score every single time he touches the ball. Also, I don't think Hood/Ingram have the muscle or "meanness" of Winslow. And, Tyus has the most composure of the guards and he can be effective without having to score.

I'll take 1999 with 2013 as second choice. Mostly saying that to be contrary, but having a team with Jabari and Hood would out run most others.

If I thought 2013 could keep up on defense I'd give them a lot better of a shot.

I like 99 also, love to see Boozer and Jah bang...both teams with better than average perimeter shooters, this difference might be Dunleavy's defensive length on Winslow, and J will would out physical Jones...Jones is a full court player and a master of getting the ball where it needs to be efficiently in a full court setting. J will would translate to a half-court 3-3 tourney better than Jones.

The teams of 3 have to be all players that had their first year at Duke together.. That's why I selected the teams I did..

So other teams would have been..

2012: Rasheed, Amile Jefferson, MP3
2011: Quinn Cook, Austin Rivers, Gbinije
2010: Kyrie, Seth Curry, Josh Hairston
2009: Andre Dawkins, Ryan Kelly, Mason
2008: Elliot Williams, Olek Czyz, Miles
2007: Nolan Smith, Taylor King, Kyle Singler
2006: Scheyer, Hendo, Lance/Zoubek
2005: Paulus, Marty Pocius, McRoberts
2004: Didn't have 3 qualifying players
2003: Didn't have 3 qualifying players
2002: JJ Redick, Shav Randolph, Sheldon W
2001: Didn't have 3 qualifying players
2000: Didn't have 3 qualifying players

With all of those considered I think 2014, 2002, & 1999 would all have a chance to win.. 2009 & 2007 would be very solid squads.. 2006 & 2008 wouldn't be easy teams to beat.. 2011 & 2010 don't have the size at Center or Forward to compete.. 2012 doesn't have the scoring capabilities to compete.. 2005 would be a disaster their freshman year.

The rest of the 90's would be:

1997: Will Avery, Battier, Elton Brand
1996: Carrawell, Roshown Mcleod, Nate James
1994: Wojo, Trajon Langdon, Ricky Price
1991: Keenny Blakeney, Cherokee, Erik Meek

Wow...tough call.

All as freshman.

I would have to make it a toss up between 1999 and 2014. The fact that kids play so much AAU ball together now days favors 2014.

Jayson over Tyus
Okafor over Boozer (but Boozer would hold his own)
Winslow ties Dunleavy

Yeah let's talk about the '97 class dudes- AVERY, BRAND, Battier!!! People forget how good Will Avery was! I put them up there with '99 and '14 for sure.

Also JJ, Dock and landlord isn't too shaby!

wow such an impressive list of classes. I'm leaning towards the '99, i just loved Dunleavy game, man he was so fun to watch. Jayson Williams like Tyus was such a cerebral PG, I would however give the edge to Williams because of his strength around the basket. Boozer and Jah would be fun to watch as well, both were strong inside presence as freshmen.

Those are all great groups. The 1999 group and the 2014 group seem to stand out most to me. Ultimately, I would give it to the group with Tyus "Stones" Jones, but the margin is slim. How great would it be to see an 18-year old Williams going against Jones? What a match-up that would be!

Top team imo would be Okafor/Jones/Winslow, but Shane/Avery/Brand or Jason/Dunleavy/Boozer would give them fits.

Even with the new editions that have been added since my last post, I still go with 2014.

I would say that Hood and Parker together in a 3 on 3 game would be fun to watch.

So it looks like the finals game would be:

2014 vs 1999

with 1997 & 2002 being in the final 4.
