I don't disagree with you. I disagree with Stoops if he feels that we don't have issues to rectify defensively. We are not a good defensive team by a long shot. Firing Eliot may not be the answer, but we have to improve on that side of the ball before we get over the hump. Not that I agree with staying pat on defensive side of football...but I fully expect the defensive staff to stay intact going into next year. I don't think Stoops believes he has issues on that side of ball to rectify.
I doubt he feels that there aren't issues to fix on defense, but instead of replacing staff I expect his answer would be off season training, more teaching and recruiting. I don't think he wants to replace Eliot but there are other ways to improve your defense through hard work etcNot that I agree with staying pat on defensive side of football...but I fully expect the defensive staff to stay intact going into next year. Agree. Our short comings have largely been due to execution, depth and talent level. I don't think the schemes have killed us as much as those factors. We need Dline players not new Coaches
No staff changes get better recruits upfront solves a lot
Find 2 more Jordan Jones at linebacker
Forget Strong. He's getting paid by Texas not to coach. He has a Joker deal.Charlie Strong had to be the most obvious choice, ties to the state, great recruiter and when he was calling plays as a DC was always extremely well thought of.
Would be a slam dunk hire for Stoops imo.
Any other "gettable" names being thrown around?
Uhh didn't Joker jump straight to Florida after Kentucky let him go?Forget Strong. He's getting paid by Texas not to coach. He has a Joker deal.
Very young defense. Depth coming from talented red shirts. Defense actually performed quite well with Mark working with them.I don't think Stoops will continue to call plays himself.....he said from day 1 he didn't want to and wanted to be more of a CEO type coach.
The D has improved from when Elliot was calling the plays sure, but honestly our defense still hemorrages yards and point to everyone who matters.
We need some new blood on D imo.
Based on what I've seen from others who probably would know, we'll have a new DC next season.
Nuclear Minter is available and ready to explode!Hope your right. No staff changes in D, namely Elliot, would be a huge mistake. This D has too much talent to be giving up the points they do. Need someone with an aggressive mindset. Hate the bend but don't break D because we break more times than not.
Defense has been improved x1010000000100101000 under Stoops. He needs to be the DC, Strong would be a great hire though.
This is not true.Strong isnt gonna jump at a coaching job or he will lose about 10 million bucks he has coming to him from Texas.
I hope you're right.Based on what I've seen from others who probably would know, we'll have a new DC next season.
Advisory role with someone??? Doubt he does that here.Strong isnt gonna jump at a coaching job or he will lose about 10 million bucks he has coming to him from Texas.
Does anyone have an actual numbers compairing last year's defense to this year's through regular season.
The defense looked like it was in better position and played with more energy thats for sure. But as far as actual improvement??? The defense still sucked most of the time imo.
Anyone who was any good scored 25 or 30 points on us almost at will.
Last year's defense gave up 27.4 points per game. This year's defense has given up 31.2 points per game. 394 yards per game allowed last year compared to 440 yards per game allowed this year. We have gotten 4 more sacks this year. 21 takeaways this year, 20 last year.Does anyone have an actual numbers compairing last year's defense to this year's through regular season.

On those metrics the defense really hasn't gotten better at all. We simply must improve on that side of the ball or our ceiling will always be 7 wins.

Without looking my guess would be 2008 or 2009. It's certainly been a long time since we've had a good defense.Thank you for the stats. I really didnt have anything to back it up, but every time people started going on about how much improved our defense was I rolled my eyes thinking "there's no way it's much better than before".
Now here is a question. What year have we had our best year defensively I wonder and under who? Minter, Brown, Archer?
Mark Stoops
We don't need a glorified down and distance reader being labeled our DC. I mean Stoops has been the quasi DC for 4 years anyway. No reason to keep DJ and not bring in a competent recruiter. DJ has been the worst recruiter on staff since his first year and big get of Hatcher and a couple of guys in Fla. We have Gran, Hinshaw, and Stoops for Fla. area. He is not much at all in recruiting circles.
I say bring in another DC who is a dynamic recruiter who you either still call the plays or you have a big bullhorn with your say. If DJ is not recruiting much and not calling the plays than it is time to go new direction.
