Why Call Timeouts on Bama's Last Drive?

I know that conventional wisdom says you call timeouts to give yourself some time for one last drive. But anybody who has watched this team knew our best chance to win this game at the end was to make the Bama kicker try one from beyond 41 yards. They were running the ball and seemed content to let the clock run, but by using all our remaining timeouts, Beamer just gave them more chances to run plays and and shorten the kick (or score a TD). Everybody in the stadium knew the our offense wasn't going to put together a 45-second drive.

Even on the last play when Smith let the guy score a TD, it was clear the defense had been told to let them score once they got the first down. Why? The odds are better that their kicker will miss a 20-something yard field goal than they are that our offense will drive the length of the field in 30 seconds. It just doesn't seem logical to me and an indicator that the coaches aren't watching the same game we're all watching.
