Why do athletes end up woke?

Real response. I think I read this way back when Madonna was wearing Kabbalah bracelets and getting all spiritual. Celebrities and athletes have a lot of time to just sit around and think about non-stressful stuff. Not having to worry about finances, home, food, childcare, etc. allows a mind to be free of concerns. However, that also lends itself to people becoming introspective and starting wonder about the meaning of their own life. So they will latch onto the latest ‘greatest’ cause, religious stuff, or what have you. Typically those are going to be more ‘progressive’ or new-ish. And since there are entire TV channels, shows, podcasts, articles, blogs, etc. about every little thing that a celebrity does, that’s what we all see as being woke. You’re not going to hear about Taylor Swift attending a Baptist church service, or Jimmy Butler giving a few hundred bucks to a homeless person. That’s not exciting news. It’s been done before. But make it a Scientology center or a few thousand to Planned Parenthood or BLM and it’s big news everywhere, because it’s different. (And a lot of media outlets tend to prefer the latter rather than the former.) Then in a few years, it will be something completely different as well.

I sincerely think that most athletes and celebrities are doing what they do because they think it is helping people in some way. Whether you agree with them or not. I’m sure there is some behind the scenes stuff to get people back into the spotlight too.

It really would be an interesting case study for psychologists, the celebrity mind.

I think people need to keep in mind that the vast majority are the first in their family to be wealthy. They haven't had a childhood of boarding school and private clubs so it's new territory. I think that in the case of athletes, a good portion grew up poor and have earned millions for others before getting their own money. I would expect some saltiness from these folks.

Most of the people they are woke with are the ones that would be the first to cancel them for not standing with them and probably barely care about sports. The younger fan base of sports is dying out. You don't see the college students showing up to games like they used to and most would rather stay home playing video games.

By going woke I think they alienated the actual fans that care about the sport/s and would cause the most damage to them. Just look at TV ratings these days to see the real impact since most of the woke people probably cut the cord and don't even watch. The celebrities and athletes just get on social media (where the woke crowd is the strongest) and worry about how many followers they have.

Groupthink plays a huge part in this, also. Celebrities travel in their own little worlds. They truly don't mix with regular people.

Because they don't live in the real world. Just as academia is littered with communists who never have to apply their ideas to the real world, athletes and celebrities never have to experience the consequences of their terrible ideas.

Couldn't agree more with this. I read up on the situation afterward. She recently released an album and has a history of abuse and mental whatever going on. Was probably just craving a couple days of Likes and idol worship. If it's sincere, then cool, whatever. But on the surface, it looks about as sincere as that dumb "Imagine" celeb video that was supposed to defeat covid or something.

Personally, I liked the university. They gave us money and facilities, we didn't have to produce anything! You've never been out of college! You don't know what it's like out there! I've WORKED in the private sector. They expect *results*.

This type of stuff will do it for many. I was in the anti-pay college athletes camp until I went to grad school.

In grad school, I had to do several real-world projects in classes for companies that were friends of a professor or connected to the college in some unofficial capacity (say like an alumnus, donor, or some other non-contractual capacity). If they had gone with some agency to do the work, they would have had to pay approximately a combined 1 million dollars for all the work, according to the professors.

Not only did I not get a single cent out of it, I was actually paying to do it. Didn't have any scholarship money, all but one company even did as little as say thanks for saving them hundreds of thousands of dollars. And the one company that did show signs of appreciation was by far the smallest one as it was a local non-profit - CASA - who couldn't afford to pay for such services to begin with. All the others were very profitable companies that could have easily afforded to pay for it. I'm sure they handsomely rewarded the professors for this free labor he/she provided the companies.

I have been firmly in the pro-pay college athletes camp ever since.

You mean cancel culture like the extremist Republicans that are "cancelling" fellow Republican left and right who won't 100% stand being Trump and his ******** stolen election propaganda/conspiracy theory that has been disproven dozens of times and has yet to ever been proven correctly once? Or is it only cancel culture when it hurts someone on the extremist right, a racist, a sexual abuser, etc.?

1. Stupid
2. A lot of athletes come from a culture where they were taught to be aggrieved.
3. Groupthink mindset with an attitude of “eat me last” and financial profit. Not much different than a politician pandering.

What is wokeism? Can we define this before moving further into the discussion?

Here's a brief, very high level description:

Wokeism is a Marxist inspired movement that started off with well-intentioned people that wanted to stop racism and social injustice. It has now morphed into a cult that seeks to silence all of those that disagree. At first, using social humiliation, but now graduating to violence through Antifa and Black Lives Matter riots.

Wokeism demands equity not equality. It seeks to destroy all norms, to redefine words, and destroy objective science in order to create a Marxist Utopia. Instead of reducing racism, this new anti-racism is just racism by a different name.

Wokeism is a full-on attack on Western Society. It rewrites history in order to confuse and inspire the destruction of the West. This virus is infecting every part of society. From children's schools to the Government. It is everywhere and is now threatening to end freedom of speech and thought. It has become impossible to speak out without fear of career-death and possible physical harm.

Enough is enough. It's time to break people out of the Postmodernist thought-prison and stop the woke movement.

This link goes into more detail. It's from a religious perspective, but you needn't be religious to understand it.

I don't know about that article, it's very scatterbrained and uses a.lot of bad logif to jump to conclusions. It's also very fatalistic. I doubt many athletes are Marxist so if that is the driver behind wokeism than very few people are woke.

One doesn't have to be an avowed cultural Marxist to carry water for the movement. Most probably aren't. But there are those who are, and it is the machine that is moving to destroy our country.

I hope you will at least be aware of what is going on and realize that you don't have to accept the radical's agenda to be a Liberal. Most of this **** is not "Liberal" at all.

My wife and I support CASA, great organization that does much needed work in the court system
