Austin Box.

Generally, the deaths of celebrities and such don't bother me. I didn't know that person and they didn't have really any impact on my life so I never really felt the embathy. But for reasons unknown, when I found out about the loss of Austin Box it was an incredible downer. Felt like losing a friend and I'd never met the young man in my life.

When saw this topic, Austin immediately came to mind. It's still hard to believe what happened. Just think, this Thursday will be the 5th anniversary of his untimely death. May 19, 2011. For some reason, I always think about Austin and his parents this time every year. I don't know why his death made such an impact on me anymore than other Sooner deaths (Steve Davis and Jack Mildren for examples) because it always hurts when someone that has been a part of the program passes. But it did. Sad.

Having experienced the sudden and early deaths of friends and family, and being 67, I remember reading a letter by a soldier during the Civil War, to his mother, with a line in it that said, "The longer I live the more convinced am I that there is no real happiness in this world without the hope of heaven".
I am not a religious person in the conventional, "God fearing", fundamentalist way, but this line written by someone facing a life and death situation every day, is something that I will remember.

My brother's room mate at Northeastern State committed suicide. He was a veteran and saw heavy action in Vietnam. I met him once and he had a toothbrush in his mouth. I spent the day with them on the campus and he never removed it.

I asked my brother what that was about. He told me the guy never got to brush his teeth in the jungle and he had a hang-up about his teeth when he got back. It was pretty shocking for a guy in High School at the time. A short time later he did himself in............

(To my brother, I know you read this board, but don't post. Call me if I have the story wrong. It was along time ago....)

One other thing I remember about the vet. In basic training they were required to "Duck Walk" in everything they did. Go to mess....Duck walk. Run...Duck walk. Go to the bathroom ....Duck Walk. Everything.

He hated his drill sargent because of the Duck Walk. He loved the guy when he got out. He said when the Viet Cong started firing rounds in the brush many were way to high and got killed. He was able to stay low because of his duck walk training and could run like a deer in the slouched position........
