why does everyone say Drew cannot run?

Drew has shown some ability to run, and in HS was decent runner. we are conflating him with Hack as a stationary pocket passer. I think he could run and not sure if it is him not wanting to run or the staff holding him back. clearly last year they pulled back on the Sean running due to his tendency to be hurt every year. Drew's running this year is probably over 5 ypc if you take out sacks. he has to be a threat to keep the DEF playing honest. he just has to do it.

It’s his Hackenberg-esque ability to throw short throws into the ground without trying that is more concerning than his ability to run. 🙄

A shame our coaching staff doesn’t include some designed runs for him. Just gives the D one less thing to worry about and limits our O opportunities.

Have you watched any games?

While he is reasonably mobile - which I think is very important - he is certainly not a "running QB"

Umm. Is this one of those revisionist history things? Did you watch the osu game or are you just trying to stir things up.

We’re in trouble if Drew gets the runs.
Yeah he’s so slow he wouldn’t make it .

Never mind the running. If we ever see the pre snap mastery of Clifford combined with the post snap talent of Allar, the O will be awesome.

if he can run, he's been keeping it under wraps
I am just looking at the times he has run. you have to take out the sacks, and his 1 yd QB sneaks, but I think his YPC might be higher than any of the backs when he actually runs. the stats include his negative yardage. I thought his long run of the year was 17 yds. He was a TE in HS before QB, and i thought his recruiting had him at 4.7 40 time. that is not slow.

at OSU I think he had 1 or 2 runs each around 5 yds.

I don’t care what the watch says, he has slow feet. He lumbers like most TEs.

Think if you give your RB the option of not taking the ball unless there’s a gaping hole. That’s why Drew’s ypc may exceed the backs in your restricted cases.

He ran quite a few times last year and posters on here were slamming Franklin for it because Drew was going to get hurt.

he had a few runs today and got some yards. he also hesitates before he takes off. if he can just get 5-10 runs per game and be as effective as he hast been doing that, it could cause some changes to the DEF schemes we keep seeing. it is not a QB run first, but just a threat he has to pose.

He's more of a "loping quarterback."
two observations

  1. first I think he has has a higher YPC than Nick and Allen, when he is actually running the ball. His runs are not sacrificing yardage. what he looks like is not that important. you have to remove the QB sneaks and sacks.
  2. the threat of him running will change how we are defended. his lack of running is causing DEF to free run to our RBs. With the slow developing plays on the read, and him not running it is creating this situation.
Drew is a far better passer than Sean, but Sean's threat of run did keep DEF honest. That is why when Sean was hurt and DEF knew he was not running it was a different game.

Seems like he is slow getting up to speed.....and never gets to full speed.......

agree with that and he hesitates before running
He’s always looking downfield first. He’s trying to make a play. Running is an absolute last resort for him. With that said, IMO, he has to run a few times from the read option to keep the defense honest. Indiana had zero reason to shadow him on the fake, they were just crashing down on the RB every time. If he keeps it and runs just 2-3 times per game from that play, maybe it loosens up the defense on the RBs a bit?
