Why does our offense start so slowly? Every. Game.

Slow would actually be an improvement. Our TD in the first quarter against SC State was our first TD in the first quarter of a game this season. Yes, you read that right: 5 games, 1 first quarter TD. And it took an FCS opponent to get there.

Offensively, we just start every game in quick sand.

On the season, we have 14 first quarter points...total...through 5 games. One TD with 2 point conversion and 2 FGs. And that's WITH all of our cupcake games out of the way...you know, the games where you're supposed to beef up your stats? Against FBS opponents, we have 6 first quarter points (1 FG each against Arkansas and Charlotte). We got 0 against GA State, 3 against Charlotte and 8 against SC State. If we can't get even get the offense going early against those teams, is there even a glimmer of hope going forward?

Against Charlotte and SC State, the talent advantage eventually won out and allowed us to put up respectable-looking scores, but we aren't going to out-talent anyone else the rest of the way (maybe Vandy). We simply can't afford to give away a quarter of football every game.

You excuse it against GA State because it's the first game of the season with a new QB under center. You excuse it against Arkansas b/c it's the first road game against a tough opponent. You excuse it against UGA b/c it's UGA. Any excuse for Charlotte or SC State?

Really great question as to why our offense starts slow and I don't have much of an answer for it.

Some things I notice with our play though is it is way too disjointed and looks hard for our guys to get into a rhythm. We seem to play tight and don't look like we play fast at all. Some times when we've run up-tempo it's looked a little better but then gets bogged down when Satt dials up a run up the middle or something stupid like that.

IDK, but I bet there are a lot of other OCs out there who could make a lot better use of the talent we have offensively.

I can only imagine that it's all part of Satterfields plan. I've been told he's a great OC, and this lack of early scoring must just be his unappreciated genius at work.

In all honesty, and no, I don't give him credit for this much thought, but some OCs spend a lot of time "setting up" plays for later in the game.

I don't buy it, but if I tried to defend him, I might try that.

I have to wonder how long you keep calling the same types of plays because you can offer an academic explanation for why it makes sense before you stop calling these plays because they aren’t working.

Predictability, poor execution and lack of aggressiveness out of the gate.
More focus needed on winning one-on-one battles by each player on the field.

I can't remember which of our games it was, but we came out on the first drive with tempo and were moving the ball really well for a few plays, then we slowed it down and the drive stalled out and we never went back to tempo.

I think it was GA.

That might’ve been it. I don’t know that tempo would’ve continued to work, but it was working. So I didn’t see the sense in switching to something that wasn’t working as opposed to something that was working. We did that a few times last year as well. We were using tempo and it was working and then we just slowed it down and our offense stalled out and then we never went back to tempo. As a fan you sit there and wonder “why don’t we go back to what was working?”

For lack of a better term, "feel for the game"?

Tired comparison, but spurrier knew when to stick the knife in and twist, he had a feel for that kind of thing. Some people are analytical, and go with percentages and trends rather than a feel for what to call. Maybe something like that is what is going on.

At this point, I'd almost rather see us just do what we did in the bowl game. I don't know if it would work, but it can't be worse than we have so far.

Reminds me of the uga game. First drive, moving the ball well then out of the blue we decided to get cute with a wildcat. Killed any momentum we may have had.
