Some fans claim WVU as national champions in 1942 but WVU itself does not count it as a national championship. Some claim the NCAA was an infant when in fact both were newly formed tournaments. NIT began in 1938 and NCAA Tournament began in 1939.

The NCAA has only recognized Stanford as having won a national championship in men's basketball in 1942.

WVU does not claim its NIT championship from the 1942 as a NC. UK does claim its NIT championship from the 40's as a NC.

The West Virginia History View shows WVU as National Champions in 1942 (but the school flies no banner claiming such)

Does the University claim one but not fly a banner or what? If they don't claim a title then why not?

Those are great questions. Hope someone can answer them.
