Why we lost to Vanderbilt

We had 4 turnovers and lost our star QB during the game. Total yards were the same.
We had a fair amount of yardage in garbage time, but turnovers weren't really the story of that game. Despite what beamer tries to do to deflect the actual truth. Most of our turnovers were in the second half, after the game was already decided. If you watch the play where sellers got hurt, you'll see another instance of an offensive lineman #78 turning to the left and leaving a completely unblocked path straight to the quarterback. Go back and watch all the game film from our previous two games, and you will see numerous instances of people running free into our backfield. It happened a lot last year, but for some reason lenoris was able to sidestep them. I think he's trying to concentrate on being a pocket passer so he just stood in there and took a hit that last year he would have avoided. The turnover margin looks like that's what hurt us, but we had at least two turnovers in the second half when we were already down by three scores.

The OL certainly needs to pick up their game. But this is nothing new for USC football. Spurrier complained about the OL for years on end.

The big issue as last night was Sellers going down. The game was playing out exactly how most had forecasted up until that point.

This team is reminiscent of Sparky Woods and Brad Scott teams that fell apart under adversity. I hope they can pull out of this freefall because otherwise we may be looking at a 3 or 4 win season.

Did you feel like this when Spurrier lost back-to-back games to inferior Vandy teams than we saw last night?

Vandy is peaking this season. Happens once every 10-15 years for them.

They have Pavia and a bunch of seniors across both lines while we're breaking in many new players.

Until we get funding to push us into the Top 10 or so in recruiting, we're always going to be a paper thin team in the SEC.

We can't afford to lose our star QB on offense and expect to beat anyone in the SEC regardless of who is in charge.

Had Sellers not thrown that INT early, SC would have gone up 14-7 and I feel the cocks could have won. Having said that, the injury to Sellers deflated the fans, teams and coaches. They gave up (IMO) then and it was the end.

Despite the hype, we have reverted to our mean.

But instead with lose by 24 at home at night.

Quite the take there.

The best teams in the conference always have one thing in common - the best O and D lines. You'll always have injuries in the backfield. The best teams can put anyone back there and the holes will be the same. Saw it with Georgia yesterday running multiple backs thru big holes.

The best teams have coaches who can adjust during the game. I’ve never seen Beamer do that. The best teams always attack. I haven’t seen us do that since Clemson last year.

We weren't on our way to beating this bunch anyway. They are that much improved. But tell you what, let's plot our record versus Power Four opponents from whatever point Sellers returns.

the Sellers injury changed the game, anyone who says otherwise is just coping. it was a close game until then, that was only our 4th offensive drive of the game because Vandy kept running the play clock down to 1 before snapping. not buying this "well even with sellers we suck" you can't say that

Blaming TO's is very diversionary to the real problems.
Beamer's offensive coaching hires will cause him to go down quickly if changes are not made and loyalty must go out the window.
Vanderbilt had a strategic offensive game plan, and we did not.
Losing Sellers is a major blow but that was always a danger. If Doty is the backup plan, the coaches have failed miserably given the QB talent on this team.

I think we might have kept it within 14 with Sellers in there. He wasn't stellar, even before he got clocked.
Sellers made one mistake otherwise he was doing great, he was 6/7 94 yards 13.4 average. I thought the OC messed up the play calling there before the INT as well. Should have used Sellers legs more, like last year. especially in the red zone. I think that is a big problem as well

He was fine on the first drive, but the subsequent mistake negated a lot of good, and as you say, we were not playing to optimally to his strengths, a Shula foible.

We were doing just fine until he got hurt.

If not for that INT inside the 10, we've got the lead and the ball coming into the 2nd half.

I don't recall us ever being able to overcome a good team when our starting QB goes down in the first half.

We just don't have those layers of talent like the top schools.

It's very likely Vandy would have suffered a similar fate if Pavia had been injured when Sellers went down.

Please, man. They were better than us every place you look - INCLUDING quarterback. Only the margin would probably have changed.

I'm not sure how you arrive at that conclusion when we're in the red zone getting ready to take the lead halfway through the 2nd quarter.

The game was a dead lock until he got hurt across the board on the stat sheet.

We had the ball on a drive with 3 mintues left in the half and we going to get the ball to start the 2nd half.

31-7 it was and 31-7 it shall forever be. There's no plausible or possible amelioration. My Sunday afternoon is too precious for parrying over it.

Sure there is but you had your mind made up before the game even started. :)
Even if that were true, the operative and immutable factor is the result. It was unimaginably worse than I could have imagined: 31-7: today, tomorrow, and forever.

Becuase you didn't envision our top player getting injured early when it was back and forth.

The result was reversed last season in Nashville when both QBs were on the field for the entire game.
