No one cares about the derby. Don't be offended by it. It's reality.
Glad for the record attendance and the big TV audience, but I was in Michigan at college graduation for my daughter this weekend. One of the parents of her classmates threw a big party for her friends, 24 kids from all over the country, and their parents and grandparents. We turned the TV on about 20 minutes before the Derby to watch.
Of the 60 or so people there, besides me, my daughter and my wife,
maybe three other people even knew it was being run. They watched it to be polite to us, but two minutes after it was over, 90% cleared out of the room. And before the race, tried to talk to some of the adults about the race, and they painfully and obviously had no idea what I was talking about and couldn't care less. Was a sobering moment of clarity for me.
