It wouldn't be a bad thing for him to gain a year of strength before playing. We have an urgent need for tackles. The interior 3 look really good. GAA played really well and he's not even a starter.

Honestly, there is absolutely no reason for him not to at least attempt to redshirt. If there are injuries then he can take it off, but the plan should be to make all attempts to redshirt him. First off, we have an All SEC type center starting. So, he won't start there. Last year Toth played pretty much every single snap if I am not mistaken. By all accounts, Bunchy is also a pretty solid backup that could end up being pretty good as well, so Jackson won't be needed as a backup. He could move to guard, but we have a lot of depth there as well. Last, centers do not jump to the NFL early very often, so the odds of him staying 5 years is pretty high. Barring injuries he should redshirt, ask Toth a ton of questions and lead the scout team offensive line and get stronger every day by having to go toe to toe with big Matt Elam.

Drake will redshirt and Landon will play. The interior of the line is very good. The tackles will be ok I see gran playing two tightends alot to help out with protections. Hart and Conrad will be big parts of the success of the run game and in pass pro.

In addition to being 3rd string, this is also his first time playing the position. He should definately redshirt.

We don't need a true freshman from Ky hs football starting at left tackle in the SEC! 18 years old going against 23 year old pros.

UK will move him to the position of need, OT. Especially if he has quick feet. Being quick footed allows you to pass block at the tackle position.

FWIW, AL started Robinson as a true FR at LT in 2014. But I'd rather that not be our best option.

No way Drake could play tackle he's only about 6'1" or 6'2" and he doesn't have the wingspan. The only way Drake would play is if we had to move Stenburg or GAA to tackle and Drake filled in at guard but I don't see that happening

No reason I saw to not RS him.

This^^^ I saw a big drop off from even Stallings to Drake, which was very surprising. Elam was pushing Drake 3 yards into the backfield. He wasn't doing that to Stallings.

It was actually very encouraging to see we have the interior depth to afford a redshirt.

Now Young and playing immediately at tackle is a totally different subject. He absolutely is needed to play

Redhirting Drake and leaving him at center is probably best in the long run, we aren't hurting on the interior and Toth missed very few plays last year------if any. His experience is also needed to call the signals and keep the other OL on top of it.

Young should start from the get go IMO (unless he clearly isn't the best option) because while he might not be our best option for the first game (which we "should" win anyway) he probably will be before a lot of games are played, and he needs all the experience he can get.

RS - To be honest - I'm not sure if DJ will ever start during his career at UK (Hope I'm wrong)

Crazy take. He will be a minimum 2 year starter. He competed well against the best of the best in every big time camp, what makes you think he wont' do the same against the same guys at the next level as he moves through his career. That plus he has a bull dog mentality that will make sure of that.

Graduating early for spring practice was one of the best choices I've ever made. I feel light years ahead from where I would be in HS.

Hopefully no one thinks Young should RS just because he is a true frosh from Ky. I prefer to had such decisions made after competition. If he is third string, RS him. Otherwise, he is in the mix, regardless of age.

It's about depth chart. We have 6 or 7 good interior linemen and 1 or 2 good tackles and young is one of them.

You're correct on all accounts, but he is small. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong and he is as good or better than Toth down the road. However, when you are talking about SEC NG's, that's a different beast then HS'ers, no matter how highly ranked they are.

It is about depth. If he is one of the good tackles, he has to play. And, fans will forever be posting "LY should have RSed" and "I wish the staff had RSed Young." It is the Kentucky way.
