They've been considering doing this for years. This is an attempt to consolidate management of space ops instead of having most handled by AF, some Navy, some Army. It's not without merit. Don't hate an idea just because you don't like the person presenting it.
Trump was way more of an athlete than obama ever was. Trump is 70 years old and I would bet can hit a ball 35 yards farther than Obama. By the way, NK has an option, disarm or face our military. Pretty obvious that the NK leader at least believes that Trump is much more feared than panty waisted Obama with his fake red line. Leading from behind is not leading. I have no idea what the final plan is here, or what the Space Force will look like when all is said and done. I suspect AF Space Command is going to be the foundation of it, but you have Naval Space Ops and Army Space Ops too. The effort seems to be about consolidating those groups into one structure, then likely adding onto it.
Here's the basic issue. Whatever the AF, Navy, or Army spends on space operations is money that they can't spend on aircraft, ships, or ground pounders, respectively. Some at the higher levels in those branches of service have some consternation over that fact.
