Getting garbage times reps is one thing but calling it a QB controversy is just crazy. Also there never been a case of a kid quitting high school mid season and joining the team. There is no history of that.
Who said QB controversy? I know I didn't.

And you are right that this is new territory in terms of a kid finishing HS early in order to capitalize on NIL money. But young players, and specifically QB's, getting snaps early on in their college careers is not new territory. So is it crazy for a kid like Wimsatt to get snaps after we've seen guys like Lewis and Odin get snaps as freshman in recent years(or a guy like Sit's who started games)? I don't think so. Lewis might have been a big guy, but Odin was a string bean. Neither new much of the playbook, nor did they prove themselves to be college level QB's, but they did get QB snaps as freshman.

Now maybe Wimsatt proves himself not ready, or maybe Schiano just plays it conservatively and rolls with the guys who have been on the roster all summer, and we don't see Wimsatt at all this year. But acting like there is no chance of Wimsatt playing this year? I think there is definitely a chance.

Midseason if you start at fall camp. But even if you don't it makes no difference if you say "shows up on campus after the season has started."
He showed up literally 2 days after the first game of the season.

I meant mid seasons as in the season has already started not the literal mid point of the season. Due to NCAA rules he can't even practice in full pads until after the second game.
Which is less then a week away from today. He can crash course the playbook this week, and be out there practicing next week. I don't see this as an issue.

I'm over the idea of QB's coming in and playing way before they are ready(maybe the problem here has been those guys aren't that good). But we see it nearly every year. We also have a QB in place who has been less then impressive.

Guys acting like there is no chance he gets in games this year? History suggests otherwise.
Sorry but what history are you talking about since Gavin is only the second kid to reclassify and forgo his senior year of HS? The other one did it about two weeks ahead of him and no one at Ohio State is talking about playing that kid this year. And he was the top QB in that class.

There are no practice reps for him. This is all game prep now. They will not be taking snaps away from Vedral, Snyder & Simon just to see if Wimsatt can play this season unless they tank. Some of you literally want Art 2.0 with the logic you are using.

Reading the playbook is one thing but actually playing it? Even a veteran NFL qb would struggle with that. To expect it from a high school kid transitioning into a college program is ridiculous.

Here is the problem. It is in season. At most you may go live scrimmages periods once maybe twice a week. So typically in season l you have a set 30 play scrimmage period. How are you going to divide that amount your QBs? How much time do you take away from the others for a kid who won’t be close to be ready to play for at least two month. It not like camp where you may got 60-80 plays twice a week.

This would be more like Jonathon Lewis, or Tyler Odin. Or on the opposite end of the spectrum Tua Tagovailoa. Sit's started out of the gate, which is obviously an impossibility at this point for Wimsatt.

He's not going to learn the entire playbook. It would be a package of plays. We've seen this numerous times.

You’re beyond reaching here, agree to disagree.
If it is going to happen I agree with you that this is the only way. Gleeson designs a”Gavin Package” of 4/5 formations aNd each one has a few RPO type options. They practice those until they think he is ready and give him a series. Evaluate and either continue and grow the package or cut back. There is no way he gets the entire playbook down and practiced. Must be in small pieces.

I don’t think it would be too much for him to at least play as scout team QB, too, to get a feel for the speed of the game…plus wouldn’t it also do well for Gleason to work on these packages concurrent with the regular 1’s working against him? It would seem to me a win/win situation…granted the purpose of scout team is to emulate the opposing team but surely it can be worked in….

This is the middle school BS that people throw out who have no clue how this works. So lets say you 3 plays out of 4 formations. First of all it would be very predictable but it will also be to the detriment of the entire team. That is twelve plays in total you have to take practice reps of. You probably at least rep each one twice. That 24 plays. So in a game week that you have planned 40 plays of live scrimmage you are going to devote half of that period to get one player into the game? So where are you going to take those reps from? Just not give the second team reps? Not give the first team practice time? All of this for a kid who may not even have what it takes to play at this level.

It would be detrimental to the entire defense. Coaches will tell you there not enough time to get ready for a game let alone take away even more time for one player. You are sacrificing preparing for a game in hopes one player who may not even live up to the hype can get reps. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

If Wimsatt enrolled in January, we would all expect hm to play. Because he's coming in after the season started, there's no way you can play him in this leauge without camp. He's also a year younger than he should be.

As predictable as when langan comes into the game? How did that work out. This package I am referring to would take maybe until week 8 to put into effect. They have the off week to use. There are ways to get it done “IF, AND ONLY IF” the staff thinks he can handle it. My point is simply that if he is going to get any PT this season the only way I see it happening is with a small package that he has been able to learn and practice. There is no way he just steps in and tries to handle the starting job.

Except we see it at the college level all the time. We do it currently with Langan. We saw it with Lewis. We saw it with Odin. We saw it with Lovelace.

It's like some guys are so smart they don't watch football.

1)Ya I just said the same regarding Langan. And we've seen numerous other examples throughout the years.

2)Yup, and no one is saying Wimsatt is taking the starting job this year. I'm not even saying he gets into a game when the outcome is still in doubt. The question as I raised it, and think most everyone on this side of the debate is asking is: Could he see some snaps in non pressure situations? I think it's possible.

1. Except all those guys ran more than 3 plays out of 4 formations multiple times in, at a minimum, fall camp. It didn't/doesn't require the same level of reps during the season.

2. Langan has been through 3 off season weight training programs. He runs about 235. Clearly in better shape to handle the physicality of the season.

You are not wrong. The point I and 05 are making is that because of the limited reps, and no spring practice, and no training camp/pre season, the only way to get him the experience he needs at practice with limited reps is to implement a special limited package. This means enough plays to get him through one series, not a whole game. No one is suggesting he starts. Let me put it this way. You are the OC. GS comes to you and says he wants you to get this kid some meaningful, not garbage time, reps in game situations. How do you do it. Only way is a special package of limited plays he can practice throughout the season until you and the HC think he is ready.

Odin was a twig, and ran the ball 37 x's vs 8 pass attempts.

Lewis was certainly stockier and had a less drastic run/pass split, but still ran the ball as much as he threw it.

Neither guy was especially ready to QB at the college level.

Both guys clearly had limited play packages(same as Langan) yes they had summer camp, but both still saw very limited snaps with the 1's.

A "special package of limited plays" might work in 1 game. This is the Big 10 with Big 10 scouting. Game 2 he gets killed.

And if I'm Gleeson, who would get snapped up in 30 seconds if he left Rutgers, that's what I say to Schiano.

Patently false assertion because those kids went through training camps and possibly spring practice. Gavin has had the luxury of neither.

4 years of eligibility plus a red shirt. Isn't that how it is most commonly expressed?

Everyone knows the kid hasn’t practiced yet, and is way behind. We also know that he has been identified as the corner stone of GS 2.0. GS called him a “great player” yesterday. He is unquestionably the future unless he’s a total miss. So, yeah, it’s possible that he might not see snaps in practice, and won’t play this year. At the same time, if he has an electric arm and picks up the plays, he doesn’t have great talent sitting in front of him. And, if that is the case the players and the coaches will see it and he will easily move up the depth chart.
