I didn't even realize they were coming up until I heard something about the opening ceremony on Friday.
It's kind of hard for me to get into the Olympics much like I used to with how global everything is. Most of the top swimmers in the world train at a facility in Florida. Frankly, many of the world's top athletes train in the US then go home to compete for their home countries. Eileen Gu was born and raised in America but represents China. Armand Duplantis was born and raised in Louisiana, went to LSU (as did both of his parents), but he represents Sweden.
I know there's always been this kind of stuff going on to some degree, but it's more common now. In part, it's a much more mobile world. The kicker for me was in the last summer Olympics and seeing all these swimmers from other countries who train in Florida year-round. Or seeing some other athlete introduced from Kyrsbekestan who trains in Phoenix.
It feels much less like country vs country now. The athletes are still fantastic. It's just hard for me to care as much when China's best skier is a born and bred American or other country's top athletes train here.
For me the Olympics should be Rocky vs Drago.
