With a new OC- how much will it set us back next year?

Or will it at all, all considered?
New play caller, new techniques, new philosophy, etc.
even if Stoops keeps the same offensive scheme, as indicated, wont it take a full season for our players to adjust and succeed?

Or is the glass half-full?
Will the new OC open it up more. will we go more N-S instead of the sidelines for no gain? Will we use the whole field for a change? Use the curl, the cross, the screen, the TEs? Throw more to the backs, ? how do you see it?
Will being more creative negate the change significantly?

Never know until the the season starts but I think Dawson will have similar schemes to what Brown had and hopefully better plays for 3rd downs. Brown did some horrible play calling on 3rd downs such as the throw short on a 3rd and 7 and the plays had little hope of success. I'm not sure our offense could get any worse than it was last season...

I actually think he will be able to look at what we have and give a very fresh approach to where we are. Got to see of course but I think we will have more tools this fall and a fresh view. Not always bad nor does it usually take long to install an offense.

In the WVA bowl game I saw much of the same stuff we did,flanker slip screen,jet sweep and inside run to set up other plays.My question is what happens at QB,does he try to clean up/change mechanics or look hard at a QB change.Also what back best suits what he wants to do

I never understood why we didn't use slant routes more since we couldn't seem to beat press coverage

He runs a similar offense to Brown........so the adjustment is about as slight as can be when changing coordinators.

Some of our players and recruits have talked to Dawson and he has told them without going into X's and O's that the offense is essentially the same and some of the terminology is even the same. The thing about this offense is that it can be installed in a week or less. There are a few base plays with a lot of variations of the same few plays. We won't be set back because of the switch from Brown to Dawson

Never really know for sure until Sept gets here. TCU was way down offensively in 13, hired new Co OCs and look at their offense in 14. That's probably an exception, but it's a recent exception and one all can hope for. Bama's offense was more explosive this year than 13, their defense just wasn't what it normally is.

But it gives other teams less info to prepare and scheme for, especially early in the year, so there are positives besides bringing in new ideas. Techniques will be the same, all coaches teach the same techniques because they all attend the same clinics, some are just better than others at doing so. Terms are likely to be different, maybe formations and motions, but that shouldn't be a major concern.

The plays will be very similar, the play-calling will be very different. Brown's philosophy was a no huddle, yet somewhat slow paced offense that played horizontally on a lot of plays.
Dawson's offensive philosophy is extremely up-tempo, with a lot of vertical plays down the field, which was something that I wanted very much this past season. I hated the number of screens that we ran, and the dink and dunk style that Brown ran, seeing the way Dawson runs offense is refreshing. Tempo kills defenses, and explosive plays kill defenses. We'll see a lot of that this upcoming season. In Dawson's time with Holgorsen, he's learned more about proper balance though.
Stoops went in that direction so that the offense would not be set back, and decided that he wanted an up-tempo, very aggressive offense.

The reason Dawson was selected was that his offense is somewhat similar to Browns and we could avoid taking a step back. Of course there will be new terminology, some different plays etc. but they should have no problem adapting to it..

"some are just better than others at doing so"---this is what Im hoping for in Dawson. He will be better at it.
But....is there any evidence he IS better than NB at it?

Exactly. I think they'll improve quite a bit.

we will see much more vertical passing, we will see much more power H back use for off tackles and screens, we will not see as much of the bubble screens (that was a Holgersen thing AND BROWN) .....

Dawson attacks lanes not boundaries with play sets trying to get a RB/H Back out against LB and WR crossing against Safeties in deep lanes

I believe our Running attack will be better because its not based on trying to slide and look for holes (which is the norm for Air Raid rush attacks) but more of a base style of going to a designed hole (2,4,6, etc.) - we will still see some of the old slide to boundary but not near as much

I, in my humble opine, believe our offense will be more diverse than the usual Air Raid.

How will it be If Barker is the starting QB a first starter and first year in the SEC play calle? No way we get to 8-9 wins like some on here predict . I sure would like to see some progression towards the end of the season. Last two season we seemed to have regressed not a good sign in my opinion.

IMO they will need to get it going quick because next years schedule is much more top loaded than last years schedule. The good thing is that the bottom and middle of the schedule are softer.

I think that there will be a seamless transition to our new OCs scheme that is basically the same offense as that ran by the departing OC. I am more worried about shoring up a leaky defense which IMO is the key to a better season. If teams continue to gash the UK defense on the ground it will be difficult to have much of a improvement in wins even if the offense has a seamless transition and improves.
