😂

They got balls, I’ll give them that. It’s a very bold strategy to demand more money when those who are financing your league have already expressed frustration on having zero return from their investment over a quarter century into this thing.
I don't see where the players are holding any cards.

They really aren’t. What argument can you possibly make for increased pay in a league that loses money hand over fist every single year and continues to exist purely because you’re almost entirely subsidized by the NBA?

Unfortunately, the WNBA exists purely as a social entitlement at this point. By all rights, the league should be shuttered. NBA owners were already griping last year about not having seen any return on their investment. Of course few will say anything publicly for fear of the social backlash.

I think social backlash is about the only card the ladies hold. Maybe they think if ESPN and a few politicians whine a lot, some of the owners will cave?

I would just keep holding up the yearly and total amount of money lost by the wnba.

I know a certain individual that if he were in charge of the WNBA, he would absolutely shut it down or he would at least find all the waste.

All the weight behind a strike is that owners lose money while players sit out. To the point by @Uscg1984 above, it may actually save the owners money if they don't play.

All Reese has on her side is being a minority woman. Frankly, that may be enough.

Seriously, doesn't the NBA lose like $10M+ a year on the WNBA.

The best thing would be the if the NBA owners just said "Ok, we'll just shut it down if you don't wanna play." They would not be able to withstand the accusations of misogyny and racism. From a business perspective, there's absolutely zero incentive to continue keeping the WNBA afloat.

It's just not a good leveraging point to ask your boss for a raise when you're losing your company money. But the NBA can't stand the backlash so that won't happen.

I don't even know how bad it would really be. Fans obviously don't care that much. It would just be talking heads putting them through the ringer. But it would pass quickly. People don't have the ability to maintain outrage these days. If you can weather the storm for a few weeks, it passes.

I would guess the owners could save money by turning out the lights, no travel expenses, etc. if they strike. It would be a good bet that the owners would lose LESS money by shutting down the league.

I'm thinking this is the PERFECT time to shut it down. The current US President (not trying to make this political at all) is doing so much so fast that the news cycle is shrinking. In a few weeks the WNBA would be an afterthought for all except those players and a few fans.

Indeed, they likely make money. Even with all the extreme hype and hoopla this past season with Clark and Reese and all that, they still lost $40 million. That level of hype is not sustainable for them and there likely will never be another player who generates as much hype as Clark. At least not for a long time. If I'm an NBA owner, last season was the dagger for me. You finally have the most hyped player in WBB history come into your league. The hype train was running overtime. Wall-to-wall 24/7 coverage across every kind of media. A full-on marketing blitz like the league had never seen. And you still lost $40 million.

The league is approaching 30 years and has never once come close to making money. It's simply absurd from the the financial perspective to keep it afloat. Some will argue it's worth the losses financially for the gain the NBA makes with women viewers, but that is extremely unlikely. Women aren't even the primary fans for the WNBA, so whatever gains the NBA makes with women viewers is marginal at best.

However, the WNBA has become an entitlement.

Hard to blame them for trying when it worked for the US women's soccer team that exists solely on funds taken from the men's team.. It'll be the same way here unfortunately. The US women's soccer team routinely gets beaten by 14 year old boys teams pulled from a single city and the same would happen with a WNBA all star team if they ever played a 14 year old boys team. But "it's not fair that we make less." Clown world's gonna clown.

It reminds me of the saying, if a tree falls in the forest and there’s no one there to hear it does it really make a sound?
