Not true. Parents and students are begging for a team, particurally at the 5A level. Plain and simple, lazy AD's. They don't want to deal with scheduling and managing addition teams.
I'm sure there is some interest but is it enough for an AD to commit to creating a team and knowing there would be enough other schools to schedule and that the sport would be viable long term? Would enough 5A schools in the upstate have teams to have a full season schedule of boys volleyball?

The answer is yes to all of your questions. We already have full schedules in the upstate. There are plenty of teams but there are teams holding out. Rock Hill also has plenty of teams.

You can defend the AD's all you want but i work with these AD's. I would never name names but they flat out tell me they are not going to start a team unless the district forces their hand. Some districts have already forced the AD's hands.

How much input do the coaches have in scheduling contests at the HS level?

I did a quick check on the web pages of the Georgia High School Association and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (the SCHSL equivalents). Neither organization appears to sponsor men's volleyball at this time, which I find a bit surprising - South Carolina is leading the way on this one.

Sadly, could that make scheduling matches a bit harder for some of the upstate AAAAA schools?

I live in Georgia and I can say there is very little interest in boys volleyball or girls wrestling. I wonder if the upstate is unique in the amount of interest?

I am not defending the ADs but I understand why they wouldn't create more work for themselves on their own accord. Creating another varsity sport would mean adding administration, accounting, scheduling, academic monitoring of players, etc. to their job with no increase in pay. I don't know many people in any job who would voluntarily add more job responsibility with no pay increase.

The region provides you your region schedule and then non-region is up to the coaches. For two months last year, I spent more time making contacts and putting together my schedule than I did my day job. We only had a couple teams in our region last year so most of the schedule fell on me.

This year is much different as I have contacts, and teams coming to me looking to get on our schedule.
