Showed a lot of heart today. Down two starters (lost Jordan Hamilton to injury in practice) and four players overall, they were forced to start little used reserve Byrdy Galernik, and it showed, training the last-place Illini in Champaign by 11 as the third quarter was coming to a close. But thanks to a 60-ft. buzzer beater by Veronica Burton to close out the 3rd, the Cats got a little bit of a boost. They then amazing ran off the first 15 pts of the 4th quarter to cap a 18-0 run, and all of a sudden what would have been a bad loss turned into a comfortable win, 64-56. After only scoring 25 pts in the first half, we scored 21 in the final quarter, with the Illini managing just 5, 3 of them coming on a meaningless 3 pt play with under 30 seconds to go. Just a nice, nice comeback.
Lindsey Pulliam had a night to forget (5-21 shooting) but was still our leading scorer (14 pts) because well, she's good. Pallas had her zillionth double-double, with 12 points and 11 board, mostly in the second half,. when Joe employed so different offensive schemes and personnel to counter the Illini double- and triple- teaming PKA, which led to a lot of success in the first half as Pulliam coiuld not make them pay. Bryann Hopkins, who has been the ongoing sub for Abu Scheid, also had a nice game, playing the most minutes of anyone (37) and adding a double-double of her own, scoring 11 pts (on 5-10 shooting) with 10 boards. Rounding our our 4 scorers in double figures was Veronic Burton, with 10 pts. 3 assists, and two steals Abbie Wolf nearly made it five double figure scorers, with 8 pts on 4-5 shooting sometimes playing at the same time as PKA in a "twin towers" lineup to counter some of what Illinois was doing defensively. Our defense was once again stifling,. limiting the Illini to 33% shooting and 20% from 3% including an amazing 10% (0% from 3) in the decisive 4th quarter.
With the win, we now move into a tie for 4th in the BIG with Purdue at 6-3, and improve to 13-7 overall. With home games this week against two teams (OSU and MInny) with 5 BIG wins combines, 8-3 is certainly within reach, though it would be nice to get healthier. We are also an impressive 5-3 in road games as well.
