Here's a piece that popped up on ESPN.com this morning.

"Forget the numbers for a moment. Williamson is going to win a bunch of awards, and if he continues to perform at this level, he'll win the Wooden Award, too. We're witnessing the most awesome effort by any player, regardless of experience, at the collegiate level since perhaps Shaquille O'Neal played for LSU. This entire movement feels like the craze we might have experienced had LeBron James played a year of college basketball."

With the awards that Zion is going to win, if he finishes up his degree at some point, do you think he could possibly get his jersey retired at Duke?

I would be surprised to see a one year player get his jersey retired
True and I would be a little surprised too. The only reason I asked is because if he wins the awards that he’s expected to win and he eventually finishes his degree then technically wouldn’t he have met the requirements for having his jersey retired even if he only played at Duke for one season.

If Zion has a quadruple double effort in becoming the Final Four MVP and goes on to become the most decorated, successful NBA player of all time, he'll get his Jersey retired.

So basically nah.

If Zion wins the Wooden, Final Four MOP, and a Natty, then I would certainly vote to hang his jersey in the rafters, graduation be damned.

I know we are getting way ahead of ourselves, but I wouldn’t completely rule out retiring Zion’s number.

The only way I will be fine with that is if he came back and got his degree at Duke in addition to leading us to a title and winning player of the year.

I agree and that’s what I asked for opinions about in an earlier post. If he wins the awards that he’s expected/predicted to win this season and he comes back and finishes up his degree at some point then technically he will have met the requirements needed to have his jersey retired even though he only played one season at Duke.

One part of criteria for having your jersey retired is getting a degree. There are other things also required. Zion would have to meet all those things including a degree which he can get but that's going to take a while. Personally I do not see any more jersey retirements in the future. Those requiŕements have been posted on this board a few times when the subject of retiring numbers have came up. I'm not going to take the time to find them and post them. I'm ok with those requirements and for some reason Zion accomplishes everyone of them this year except the diploma then #1 remains open. If Duke and Coach K decides to change the criteria then things change. Until then it's not up us fans. OFC

The bar for getting a jersey retired at Duke is high. Now had he gone to the University of Texas under Coach Barnes, then yes his number would have been retired.

It would have been retired soon as he signed his letter of intent.

Sorry yours, mine or anyone else's vote just doesn't count. I hope that they come up with a way to honor our great players who have not met the criteria for their jerseys to hang in the rafters and I'm not suggesting the unc cheater u way of doing it. Sooner or later they are going to have so any banners and numbers up in the rafters that the ceiling or roof which ever is greater is going to call Ave in. I would like to see something along the order of a ring of honor similar to the way the Dallas Cowboys have honored their all time greats. OFC

If, and its obviously a big IF, Zion goes on to do all those things I mentioned, he will have had one of the greatest seasons in Duke history, if not the greatest. One Williamson jersey in the rafters does not make us UNC.
