My recollection is that Gminski was a camper at a camp where Terry Chili was a counselor. In those days players stayed under the radar for a long time and Gminski wasn't well known. Chili recruited him to Duke before anyone else knew about him. In my opinion it was the best thing Terry Chili ever did for Duke basketball.
Sorta. Chili--the camp was at Maryland-BTW-alerted Bill Foster and Duke got a head start. But other schools found out. In fact Gminski and Mike O'Koren made official visits to UNC the same weekend and to Duke the same weekend.
