I could have gone the rest of my days without being reminded of that bowl loss. If ever we needed the King in the booth running our D it was that night. (I've mentioned before how we used the same play 25+ years earlier many times)
That game bothered me too, not only for the loss itself and the way OU lost, but the way some "journalist" declared it as being "the greatest upset in bowl history".
OU lost to a Boise State team that was unbeaten, a team that sent 10 players to the NFL.
OU was without Malcolm Kelly, a 1,000 yard receiver and one of the best ever at OU.
Paul Thompson was OU's QB and while he had some good moments in his career, he was not in the same league as Heupel, Bradford, White or Mayfield.....and he replaced Bomar (who might have been one of OU's greatest quarterbacks) before the season. Thompson is, however, one of my favorite Sooners for the way he carried himself on and off the field.
OU had lost to Oregon due to several officiating crew meltdowns and lost decisively to Texas 28-10, and barely escaped with a 17-16 win over ATM. Clearly this was not one of OU's greatest teams.....not by a long shot.
OU rallied from a 28-10 deficit in the third quarter, but too much damage had already been done to doom the Sooners.
While OU was a 7-1/2 point favorite to win, then yes, it WAS an upset...........but not at all "the greatest upset in bowl history".
