Denial is not a river in Egypt. CSU exploited our vulnerabilities and Ill put an exclamation point on it. We can't defend the dump off and can't defend the drive without fouling. And we don't really shoot well.

We didn't shoot badly against Illinois, but they shot off the charts.

It happens. Illinois is a good team.

That game reminded me of when my son's middle school team played Catherine Cook, the best team in the conference. They were just physically overmatched and overrun by a well-coached group hitting on all cylinders.

It certainly seemed like Underwood sat down with his players and said
"This is what they will do defensively... so this is what you do...."
and they got everything right.

Almost like when you have no inside presence defensively the other teams scores at will. Then when you have no inside presence offensively and your guards aren’t hitting 3’s you don’t score well. Lots to work on.

Big problem was we hit nothing (under 40%) and we let them hit everything (over 60%) despite fouling way more. The guys need to be tougher - screw the fouls - NU is gonna get called for blowing a kiss so put the guy on his ***. Make your damn fouls count. Stop whining about touch fouls and make smart hard fouls early. Set a tone. What happened to Paul Bunyan - damn has he disappeared.

We hit enough threes. But need that inside out game from last year. Pick and roll. Throw it inside and see what happens. Get Mart more time - he’s a bruiser. Get Preston some time - maybe at the four - he plays to contact.

Next game, at home, is big for me. This team has no identity. One day, they kill giants. The next, they fall to daisies. IL is a good team but that massacre…

Yo SD - this is where your boy proves whether he can coach.

NU is all about defense first; we had little to none yesterday. Not sure how we adjust to guys that are better and bigger than us. We really just don’t have an athletic 6’8” guy that can defend 1:1 a top scorer (amazing what Audige and Beran could do for us). Most on this board don’t like zone, but seems we need to mix it in. Need to get better on the post-trap. Nicholson needs to protect the rim better. Lots to work on, but also some limitations that we cannot overcome. I think CCC knows all of this and more and will keep the team together.

How tall is Preston? Mart?

When you are 6’8” and shooting, you are not getting over an outstretched 6’7” hand. They had four mid sized guys and a normal guard. Our guys can switch all day in a 4 and 1 and disrupt the outside shot. MN stays home with weak side help.

Also, smaller should mean a bit quicker. It’s easier to go up strong and fight through hands under the basket. But if you are any of those 6’mid something Illini, you have to get the ball and bring over your head. Again, 4 and 1 should cause disruption and allow half the four to watch the ball and pass with MN protecting the against the cutter.

Nicholson is only good for 15 minutes a game right now. What about the other 25?

The guards hit 4/10 3’s against Illinois. They hit 9/15 3’s against Purdue. 15 point difference. 20% decreased efficiency. Both top ten opponents and wildly different outcomes. Not the problem but a problem when your bigs don’t score inside.

As a team, NU hit 8 of 16 vs IU and 10 of 20 vs Purdue from three.
As a team, NU hit 25 of 61 vs IU and 26 of 60 vs Purdue inside.

If you want offensive disparity, NU went 8 for 8 from the line vs IU and 20 of 32 vs Purdue.

The IU loss was a lot lot more about the defense.
