The rubber match tonight was a flat out classic. Hetlet shows enormous cajones going for it on 4th and 9 with :45 left at the NV 40 yard line. With the NV kicker having wind at his back he might have made it from 50 if West doesn't get that first down.

West QB Cole Brady showed immense poise throughout the game but he stepped into the pocket on that 4th and 9 and made the throw of his life. That kid proved he is a gamer and has held maybe the hottest hand in town since the HC game.

Looking forward to seeing the Homer Flosswood machine at Duchon Field next Saturday. West might be able to give those guys a game.

I thought of a bunch of possible outcomes to these games but I never even considered WV winning, shows how much I know.

If @JCHILLTOPPERS would come out and play, he would confirm my thoughts on HC being a bit of a fraud. Saw this one coming week 5.

I may not go so far as to call HC frauds but maybe the playoffs require a level of grittiness that the well healed of Hinsdale seem to lack. You have to play like your life depends on securing that victory and maybe a coach at HC just runs into too many knowing lockerroom smirks that say "thanks coach, but we all know that's not true."

I will say that losing #5 changed the character of that defense. Not sure what the stats showed but it felt like he made 15 tackles against GW. His absence was obvious early against WV.

Does this mean Glenbard West and Lyons are suspect as well because they lost to HC mid/late season or do those two teams get a pass because they won their round one playoff matchups?

I kind of answered in my post that overlapped yours, but no question playoffs require a different level of play. Nearly impossible to keep 16-18 year olds focused for the mentality of winner take all. HC likely accomplished their goal for the year by winning conference.

LT & GW may meet their fates this weekend playing two of the top four teams in the state.

I would agree that in the early going HC didn't seem to have that "playoff fire" burning in their players. A bit of a stunned...deer in headlights" feel to it, but they settled down, got back into the game in Q2 and Q3 and then got overwhelmed a little by 88 in the fourth quarter. their QB was a tremendous player in my opinion and was the key to their offense in the air and on the ground.

Two ships passing in the nite ;)

Yeah - see my "playoff fire - 1st qtr "deer in headlights" post.

WV doesn't have near the playoff experience that GBW does - but they have a lot more playoff experience than most teams and that. Can be a big advantage

I'm not a big fan of using counterfactuals in reasoning about the outcome of ball games. Given that, I do think that anyone who followed HC this year would agree that, were #5 to have played, the game would have looked different. Not saying HC would have won or anything, but just that the game would have looked different. For example, he was a handful on the pass rush when he'd blitz, whereas the pass rush on Saturday was lacking without him.

The same thing can be said with the WV injuries or with Neuqua last nite and their injuries - if Donny plays - do they get that extra long pass play or two and a TD that changes the game? We will never know....

True, Navarro is a game changer.....and we played without Owen Piche (WR, Navy commit). I didn't know that Owen was out. I'd argue that he is/was our best, most versatile offensive weapon.
