I thought I'd start making general WSS posts instead of just HC posts. Without @capnbillhitters around the WSS talk on the board feels lacking and my HC posts will quickly lose the little interest they had as the Devils only have two chatter-generating match ups left (vs GW and York). Here goes nothing:

WSS game of the week: GW vs York. York hasn't always been been a cupcake WSS foe. They missed the playoffs only once from 2004-2011, which included a WSS championship and 11-2 semi-final run in 2006. Then came a rough patch from 2012-present. With Mike Fitzgerald at the helm and a junior class that had great success coming up in the youth BGYFL program (I assume most of that same core group is present this year), York football might be back.

GW's smaller, high-speed, sideline-to-sideline defense can sometimes struggle with power run attacks anchored by big olineman and big power backs (see recent years vs HC and last year vs Oswego). That's exactly what, from what I have seen, York brings to the table this year. Look for the young Duke hogs to come out playing nasty.

A 27pt outing wk3 with rotating QBs versus AT also suggests that GW has an offense that isn't in synch yet. AT always plays GW tough as nails, but AT isn't on an up year like they've had before, hence the suggestion that the GW O is struggling. York's defense is a bit unproven but has posted back to back goose eggs, and at least on paper looks decent.

Given all that, I'm still inclined to favorite GW--I'd say a 9pt favorite--but I expect a competitive game going into the 4th quarter. Should be a hard-hitting game, and I wouldn't be surprised if the house is packed on both sides in Elmhurst. I'm not sure what my prediction is for this one yet. But it's something to be excited about if you're a WSS fan.

Edit: What's the board thinking on GW @ York?

Rest of WSS: OPRF gets a week to try to develop its offense against Morton: 49-0

LT gets its first win against PW: 28-12

HC handles DGN up front on both sides of the ball, offense and defense show improvement: 35-0

I think in the York vs GBW game, GBW proves to have just too much team speed. The LBs for GBW are just too fast for York's beef, and York's offense seemed to sputter vs an under impressive LT. Ty Cox is due to have a huge game...look for him to run back a kick or punt, plus when GBW ground game gets clicking there is no letting up on the gas.

OPRF is going to get a nice breather vs Morton, should be one sided route

HC... while not a bye week, the level of competition is significantly lower this week than the prior three, and HC gets much needed rest. HC is just too much for DGN to stop on both sides of the ball.

LT is definitely down this year, but despite the injuries, they still have solid coaching and will improve each week. Proviso West is not going to have a chance to get win #1 until week 7 vs Proviso East.

Couple takeaways from this weekend's games: GW 45 York 24: York had opportunities early. Drove to GW 15 on first drive then got pushed way back by penalties and missed a field goal. Second poss York drove down inside GW 30 but a WR coughed it up on a reception and gave it back to GW. Offense fizzled out a bit for rest of first half. York put together a couple nice TD drives in second half against GW 1s but scored last touchdown against GW's 2s. Defensively York showed promise insofar as GW was forced to pass the ball to keep the chains moving on a few drives, but GW QB play looked good and eventually the York D looked outmatched. GW did itself no favors with lots of penalties.

tl;dr GW a full notch above York and York will have to beat either Willobrook, HC or OPRF to get to 5 wins. Ouch.

HC 34 DGN 6: HC was down another captain on offense (OG) but the HC O was able to spread the ball around and continues trying to find its niche without Skokna. That included a big game by his little brother and I expect that will lead to more carries next week. HC defense has remained healthy and is playing good ball. A nice test coming up next week with York. DGN has kids that play hard and want to win but York, OP, GW and HC playing at a higher level this year.

OP 49 Morton 6: OP gets two more weeks to get its offense in synch with DGN and PW, before facing GW and York. Defense is ready.

LT 13 PW 7: Tough year for both squads here...don't have any details on this one but appears to be a red flag for LT fans.
