Man, IU just plummets further. But who knows? If he can get some dudes, you never know these days.

Better resume than Pope. Turned around Drake immediately. Turned around a garbage WVU team immediately. Lost his best player and still should've made the tournament. Good recruiter. With IUs NIL he should do fine.

Not sure what you were expecting. No one ever believed IU was landing Stevens. DeVries is probably on par with an Otzelberger or Drew. You hired Pope. UL hired Kelsey. Duke has Sheyer. UNC has Davis who will likely be fired next year.

Brad Stevens must've had a scheduling conflict or something.

This guy ALMOST made the tournament this year.

Right up IU's alley to maintain their current three-decade tradition of modest success.
They would have easily made it had his son not got hurt, I wonder if he’s getting a medical year now? He’s a good player. They still deserved the bid over UNC.

In what way is his resume better than Popes? I’m not dogging the hire. He may do well. But his resume is not better than Popes. And is it Scott Drew you’re saying he’s on par with? I’m not a big Drew fan but he won a national championship.

He's exceeded expectations everywhere he's been. No I'm not saying he's a HOF coach. Might not work. Might be elite. We will see. But his resume screams very good coach. And not a weirdo like Crean or Archie or a lazy deadbeat like Woodson.

I agree. I just needed material for my “almost made the tournament” joke. Lol.

100 % hired in a hurry because of the portal. I do not understand ad's rushing through getting a new coach so you can get the 23rd best player instead of the 35th best player from teams that did not make the NCAA tournament It's a decision you have to live with for 3 or 4 years. Just chill. Sacrifice that first season of you must, which you do not

Yeah but coaches can’t transfer mid season or year after year without repercussions.
I suppose. But they make millions. And often the school they are going to will buy them out. I just think if a coach can just go wherever he wants, so can a player.

So as an IU fan, what is your take on the hire?
Are you happy with it, was he on your radar? who had you wanted?
Outside of some Rival Ribbing here and there, I'll reserve judgement as I'm just not familiar with the guy.
I have to imagine Dusty May being at Michigan has a sting of what might have been.

You also don’t have 12 coaches on a team to replace yearly. Plus I mean if they wanna repay their NIL or the new school to get them then sure I guess.

DeVries is a huge improvement over Woodson. And who else really wants to deal with the toxic sludge that is the current Hoosier fan base?

To quote YOU on TheHoosier.com, “he’s another Archie I believe.”

You had it right on Indiana’s board but thanks for coming here to spread BS.

The guy never made the tournament as the regular season champion, even in a minor league like the MVC. Only his son’s talent propped him up in his one year in a major conference and after Tucker was hurt the team pretty much collapsed. You were wrong about one thing: Archie had actually won a few NCAA tourney games. This guy has not. And his lofty win percentage? Mostly against Quad 3-4 talent.

And he’s not Mark Pope for a few reasons: Pope had played for a national champion at Kentucky so he knows the culture and what it takes to succeed here. And he had made the NCAA tournament as an at-large from a power conference, not by winning an automatic bid from a minor league tournament. Also, Pope ran an innovative offense perfect for today’s game, proven in a major conference. Devries’ offense, as measured by KenPom, is roughly at the same level as Woodson’s.

I think you were right on TheHoosier. Those of us who have enjoyed seeing Indiana only advance passed the Sweet 16 once in 32 (and counting) years and miss nine of the last 15 NCAA tournaments and only make it twice in the last nine years (and counting) are relieved by this hire.

It’s a solid hire. In general, hires by top 10ish programs historically aren’t big splash hires anymore. Mostly gone are the days of major successful coaches changing jobs to jump to a top 10 job. The last 1 was probably Cal. Take a look at this list of current coaches since Cal to UK at top 10ish jobs:

UK - Pope - no tournament wins
UNC - Hubert - no head coaching experience
Duke - Scheyer - no head coaching experience
UCLA - Cronin - 1 Sweet 16
UL - Kelsey - no tournament wins
Villanova - Neptune - no tournament bids
UConn - Hurley - 1st round tourney win
Arizona - Lloyd - no head coaching experience

The days of Roy going from Kansas to UNC, Self going from IL to Kansas, etc might be a thing of the past.

Every time IU hires a coach, this board trashes the decision and an IU fan comes over to defend the decision. Since Bob Knight IU has had 6 head coaches counting Dakich. Omitting DD since he only coached 7 games and had a losing record, IU fans are 0 and 5 while Rupp Rafters (UK fans) are 5 and 0. Sooner or later you might win one.
