Heard a rumor today PSU trying to but their way out of this game, WVU not playing ball supposedly. Would be embarssing as hell if they pull out of this game.

Can't imagine they'd bail on this game. I guess if they did, it would be to play a lesser opponent?

And get another home game for $$.
Or someone might be interested in PSU for one of the early season kickoff games. These can net as much as, or more than. a home game.
I assume any cancellation with WVU will cost $$$.
Or the game can be rescheduled for a future date. Would involve compensation, but not as much as for an outright cancellation.

As well as enhance our reputation.

Michigan cancelled a series with UCLA relatively last minute and replaced them with non-power 5 games (which is why they had no P5 non-conference games the last two seasons). I don't think it really matters from a reputation standpoint.

As a fan, I definitely want to see good non-conference games, so I would be sad if we cancelled this game with WVU.

If you look at the schedule for next year, they should cancel this game. It might be the toughest in the country. Losing the game stinks but the wear and tear on the roster next year will be substantial.
Michigan's schedule is tougher. They have Texas in non-conference, plus USC, Wash, Oregon, and tOSU.

As a fan I also want tough non-conf games but they do little to benefit the team and only hurt the chances for the playoff. Michigan had one of the weakest schedules in the country this year and it didn't hurt them one bit. If you are in the B1G or SEC and win your games, you're all set. Next year with the expansion to 12 there's even more margin for error and someone like UGA who also had a weak schedule but had a loss will still get in. There's simply no incentive to add difficult games outside of conference play anymore, especially with the money for the program coming from pre-negotiated media contracts with less importance put on ticket sales and concessions from fans.

If true, cancelling would be ridiculous IMHO. If they're afraid of a loss then the game shouldn't have been scheduled in the first place. I know, it was scheduled under a different AD but it would still be a bad look. A trip to Morgantown would be a good test to start the season. On the financial side, the AD would pay money to WVU then pay more money to have another team do a one-and-done in Beaver Stadium. It would suck all around.

I still think it was bush league when UVA cancelled on us. Doing the same to WVU would be bush league as well.

I don't think Wash or Oregon are going to be close to what they were this year. Washington loses a LOT and Oregon, at least, loses Nix.

Well, things changed a bit. When it was scheduled, our only tough games were tOSU and UM. Now we add in Washington, and USC. Having said that, after WVu we have Bowling Green, a bye and Kent so we should be ok.

I worry about how something like this might affect our recruiting in and around Elkins.

Does anyone besides me recall when WV folks were referred to as “hoopies”? Any idea to the origins or meaning?

Schedules of the "Big 6" (PSU, OSU, Michigan, USC, Oregon, Washington) in the Big Ten, who plays who - and top OOC game:

Penn State:
OSU, USC, Washington - and WVU

Michigan:
OSU, Oregon, Washington, USC - and Texas

OSU:
Oregon, PSU, Michigan - and Marshall

Oregon:
OSU, Michigan, Washington - and Or State

USC:
Michigan, Penn State, Washington - Notre Dame and LSU

Washington:
Michigan, USC, PSU, Oregon - and Wash State

Michigan and Washington each play 4 of the other Big 6. Michigan's OOC with Texas would almost certainly make their's the toughest schedule.

Those who only play 3 of the other Big 6? USC has both Notre Dame and LSU OOC, so they would probably have the toughest slate of those 4 teams - and tougher than Washington's overall.

OSU, Oregon and PSU play only 3 of the Big 6 - and none play a top OOC game. OSU's is probably the easiest slate - since they don't even have a P5 team on their OOC (PSU has WVU, Oregon has Oregon St)

Schedule strength from toughest to easiest?

Michigan, USC, Washington, Oregon, PSU, OSU.

And, for all of those teams (especially the old Big 3 of the Big 10) the schedules are much deeper than they have been the last few years (when the Big 10 was garbage from team's 4-14, and schedules were not skewed to provide more good-vs-good games for TV).
Somewhere in that mix there will be a quite good team with a 9-3 record (at best). That team will likely make the "field of 12", but there are going to be a lot of scars on a couple of those squads.

From Northern panhandle region of WV and eastern ohio along the river where many people worked in the copper shops making 'hoops' for wood barrels
I never knew that. The only place I see anyone being referred to as a hoopie is on the Pitt message board. I thought it was just another stupid thing they came up with.

It is an Ohio Valley expression for the most part. Put a peg in Wheeling WV and draw a 50 mile radius and thats generally who uses the term

Alabama (asked to reschedule at a later date), VT, and UVa all did it to PSU. It’s a business.

Didn't we cancel VT because of the Covid thing, and the Big cancelling the season? If so, I don't blame them from cancelling the game at PSU if they couldn't reschedule the Blacksburg game.

Yes, I thought PSU was looking to reschedule and VT backed out completely?

Kick a fg with a minute left to go up by 4 td's , how you like that decision now. In their conference
a loss is bigger in the playoff picture than it is in the Big
