MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 12, 2017) – The No. 29 West Virginia University cross country team concludes its 2017 regular season with a return trip to University Park, Pennsylvania, to compete in the Penn State National Open on Friday, Oct. 13, at the Blue-White Golf Course.
The women’s 6k race is set to begin at 10:45 a.m. ET.
“Since Louisville, I would say the group has trained quite well,” WVU coach Sean Cleary said. “The heat and the humidity came back and they handled it extremely well. Going into Penn State, the competition will be incredible, but I think we’re in an even better place than we were going into Louisville. Hopefully, that pays dividends.”
Friday marks the second time this season the Mountaineers will race at Penn State. The team competed in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 8, finishing in sixth place as a team. The meet also is the ninth time WVU has raced at Penn State since 2014.
WVU enters the week ranked No. 29 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches’ Poll. The team was included in the latest national poll on Oct. 3, the first time since Nov. 1, 2016.
West Virginia continues to rank fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings, which were last released on Oct. 2.
The Mountaineers are one of four ranked teams that are racing at the Penn State National Open, with No. 10 Penn State, No. 15 Villanova and No. 26 Oklahoma State joining WVU at the meet. In all, 18 teams are set to participate in the event.
The Mountaineers last competed at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, on Sept. 30. WVU earned an eighth-place team finish in a field of 37 Division I schools. Redshirt senior Maggie Drazba paced West Virginia on the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Stark Park course (5k), finishing 21st overall in a time of 17:09.52.
Redshirt senior Amy Cashin also registered a top-30 finish at Louisville, crossing the finish line in 17:17.16, good for 29th place.
WVU has competed at the Penn State National Open eight times in the past 10 years, including each of the past three seasons. The Mountaineers finished fourth as a team at the event in 2016. The group last won the meet in 2013.
In two weeks, WVU opens the postseason by competing at the 2017 Big 12 Cross Country Championship at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, Texas, on Saturday, Oct. 28.
