Rowing Holds End-of-Year Banquet
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 14, 2015) – The West Virginia University rowing squad held its annual banquet on Saturday, May 9, at Touchdown Terrance, at Milan Puskar Stadium.
On Saturday evening, seniors Alison Coates (Leesburg, Va.), Lisa Deklau (Gambrills, Md.), Elizabeth Duarte (Morgantown, W.Va.), Addie Dulaney (Port Charlotte, Fla.), Kaitlyn Eason (Dauphin, Pa.), Kelly Kramer (Lakewood, Ohio), Kimberlie May (Grand Junction, Colo.), Bethany Sapen (Harrisburg, Pa.), Melinda Sharon (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Rachel Cokeley (Harrisville, W.Va.) were recognized by President E. Gordon Gee, as the senior crew will miss graduation to compete in the 2015 Big 12 Rowing Championship this weekend.
“Having President Gee come and address our seniors was very special,” said coach Jimmy King. “With graduation occurring during the Big 12 Championship our seniors miss the opportunity to be recognized for their academic achievements and the accomplishment of earning their degree. It was great for them and their families to witness them being recognized by the university’s president.”
Coach King also recognized his novice and varsity squads with post-season awards along with staff members from academics, athletic training and administration.
Freshman Abbigail Rees earned the Flame Award, also known as the team spirit award as a novice crew member, followed by senior Addie Dulaney on the varsity team. The Flame Award compliments a rower’s work ethic and overall positive outlook on the season.
The Hammer Award is an award given to the fastest erg score on the novice and varsity squad. An erg is a machine used to simulate the action of watercraft rowing for the purpose of exercise or training for rowing. Freshman Mollie Fisher earned the fasted erg score as a novice with a time of 7:28.7, and senior Lisa Deklau scored a program-best 6:55.3 to earn the award for the fourth-straight year.
Freshman Lorena Rose was honored with the Most Improved Player Award on the novice squad, along with sophomore Alisha Brownfield on the varsity squad whom also won this award as a novice last season. Freshman Anna Cokeley earned the distinction of Most Valuable Player as a novice along with senior Elizabeth Duarte on the varsity squad.
This season the Mountaineers competed in five regattas, and travels to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for the Big 12 Rowing Championship set for Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17.
This year’s event is hosted by the University of Tennessee at Melton Hill Lake. This season marks the fourth consecutive year the event has been recognized as a fully supported conference championship.
Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee join Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia in the 2015 event as affiliate members competing for the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Rowing Championship.
