Women’s Soccer Duo Set for National Camps
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 15, 2015) – Two West Virginia University women’s soccer student-athletes will attend national team camps in the coming week.
Rising sophomore Michaela Abam will attend the U.S. Soccer U19 Women’s National Team training camp in Chula Vista, California, from May 16-23. Additionally, incoming freshman Bianca St. Georges will attend the Canada Women’s National Team EXCEL U18-20 NEX/Olympic Development Camp May 18-26, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Abam, a forward from Houston, attended the U19 team’s training camp in April. She has been a regular on the U.S. U19 and U20 teams over the last year. This week’s camp is the second U19 WNT training camp of the year and also the second since 2004, when the age group moved from a U19 competition to a U20 competition. The reinstatement of the U19 focus is in line with the national program’s desire to increase training for the United States’ youth women’s and girls’ national teams.
All athletes in the U19 age group are eligible for the team that will attempt to qualify for the 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Papua New Guinea.
The Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year, Abam saw time in all 22 matches her rookie season and paced WVU in points (16), goals (8) and game-winning goals (4). Her totals ranked No. 6, No. 4 and No. 2, respectively, in the Big 12. An NSCAA All-Central Region Second Team honoree, she earned six starts and tallied two, two-goal performances.
St. Georges, a defender and native of St. Felix de Valois, Quebec, is a member of the Mountaineers’ 2015 class. She recently attended the Canada Women’s National Team EXCEL U17-19 Camp in March with WVU teammates Carla Portillo and Easther Mayi Kith.
A two-year member of the Canada Women’s National U17 Team, St. Georges also played at the 2014 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica. She has started eight matches for the U17 squad.
