Myers Named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (February 22, 2016) – West Virginia University sophomore pitcher BJ Myers has been named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Myers pitched eight shutout innings in WVU’s 3-0 win at Charleston Southern on Sunday. The victory for the right-hander helped the Mountaineers to a season-opening series win in Charleston, South Carolina.
Myers, a Flower Mound, Texas, native, pitched eight innings and allowed no runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked just one. CSU hit into three double plays as Myers faced 26 batters, just two over the minimum in his eight innings. With runners on base, Charleston Southern was 0-6.
Myers faced more than three batters in just two innings – the first and fifth.
This is the first Big 12 award of the season for West Virginia and the 13th since WVU joined the league for the 2013 season. Myers is third Mountaineer to earn Big 12 Pitcher of the Week accolades, joining Sean Carley (2013) and Harrison Musgrave (2014, four times).
Sunday’s performance on the mound capped a strong weekend for the WVU pitching staff. In the three-game series, WVU pitched two shutouts, held CSU scoreless in the final 19 innings and allowed just two earned runs all weekend.
The Mountaineers return to the road for an 11-day roadtrip before the home opener on March 11. WVU first plays three games at UNLV on Feb. 26-28, before traveling to Scottsdale, Arizona, for an exhibition contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Feb. 29. The Mountaineers will then go to Hawaii for a four game series against the Rainbow Warriors, on March 3-6.
