I was ecstatic last January when I heard over the radio that we hired Mike. I was literally smacking the steering wheel with joy. I believe since his second year at Okie St he’s been putting up gaudy numbers at 3 different stops. I know it’s only his first year here but man our offence has been putrid for most of this season and no one can question the talent. The guy’s that are playing, everyone wanted for the most part and most times we look worse than a high school offence. Honestly, how many games would we have won without Jahan?…What is it? Is it James interfering? Is it overrated talent? Is it lack of player development? Is it a chemistry issue? Is it an OL issue and an OL issue only?

Struggles on offense across multiple offensive coordinators makes me believe it's Franklin. CJF is a great recruiter, great motivator, leader and organizer. NOT a great game day coach or playcaller. He typically leaves the defense alone and the defense typically performs well. Just my opinion of course.

Why does everyone say Franklin is a great recruiter - he's a decent recruiter and he's at Penn State. Most of his prior years were okay as recruiter.

I keep beating this drum - PSU is not recruiting well, not even close to "well". All you need to do is look at the on field product. The offense had two good players - Dotson and Washington. That's all. Defense was better but I point out the D included two JUCO S who were 3*, a 3* CB in Porter, a 2* in Hardy (apologies if he was 3*), transfers from Temple and Duke who were 2-3* recruits; yes, Mustipher, Brooks, Jacobs and Smith were highly regarded. PSU is suffering from a shocking lack of talent on the offensive side of the ball. If this were the NFL, only Washington would be back, every other position would be in search of an upgrade.

I would say he does recruit well. Look at his class rankings the last few years (especially the 2022 class).

Now if you want to say he can’t develop that talent (especially along the O-Line), that’s a conversation I would be all in on.

MY isn't the problem here. It's Franklin. And his stupid obsession with chunk plays, amongst a laundry list of other issues. How many OCs have they had with the same issues. There is one common denominator. With any luck they'll leave him in Tampa and make him take the Appalachian Trail home.

I don't think it is a MY issue. Moorhead brought some interesting concepts, got a head coaching gig. Rahne tried to copy what Moorhead did, Franklin got him a head coaching gig. KC was never able to install his offense and was unceremoniously fired because MY was available. You are looking at 3 offensive systems in 3 years...eh, call it 2.5 systems because KC couldn't really put his stamp on things. That churn stunts growth.

Franklin's problem is he wants to put up offensive numbers that one would associate with Oklahoma, he just doesn't know how to get there. Thus the churn at OC. The next guy is always the better guy. Kinda like how the backup QB is always the best player on the team. His other problem is he keeps forgetting that the offensive line is probably the most important unit in football.

It makes you wonder. Every offensive coordinator looks great. Then the season starts and the on field product looks like the same crap from the year before. Low percentage deep sideline throws, qb runs into the teeth of the defense, few rb screens, runs for no gain over and over up the middle. Is Franklin getting too involved in the offensive play calling ?

If Franklin is such a great recruiter then why is our offensive line bad year in and year out. Why does an injury to one player on the d-line decimate our defense. Why is there no depth behind him. I think he is a decent recruiter and either a poor developer of talent or poor evaluator of recruits.

How many OC's has Alabama had in the last 3-5 years? Just asking.

There certainly is a big difference in defenses of the big12 and big10 overall. But the chunk play obsession just seems like desperation from the opening kickoff.

Before this season I thought he was a great recruiter. But for all the reasons above, in reality he isn't. There are many aspects of Franklin's tenure that are mediocre at best.

Alabama has a boss at head coach, and they hand pick the talent. They are playing in the championship game and the fanbase hates Billy O. I forgot what I was saying. Yeah, Alabama has a boss at head coach and they hand pick their talent.

This is one of the issues regarding Franklin. On one hand people say what a great recruiter he is. Then, half way through the season, we start to hear how a coach can only do so much- he doesn’t have the ‘Jimmies and Joes’.

Well, which is it? You can’t have it both ways.

Either Franklin is an average recruiter or he recruits well but player development and scheme are poor and don’t take maximum advantage of the talent. It may be a mix of both but I tend to think it’s more the latter.

Not sure how you are placing blame on Coach Franklin for the departures of Moorhead and Rahne. They left to become head coaches. What is Coach Franklin supposed to do. And, maybe I am misreading your post.
The KC deal - 🤷🏻‍♂️.
I’ll be curious if/when the offense clicks again with the same coaches if people will admit they were wrong. Need more than one year with an OC to make it work.

I've said it before...CJF recruits the speed guys pretty well. He is drawn to the splashy, speed guys. They sense that and are, in turn, drawn to him. The big eaters, not so much. Who did CJF visit after the regular season was over? Allar, Saunders, Singleton...all important guys, don't get me wrong. But how many 300 lb+ players got CJF into their living rooms?

It is super important that the OL and DL coaches be great recruiters or we will be stuck in this muck forever.

Good post. That is an interesting POV about whom Franklin visited after the season ended.

I read someone's post that claimed Alabama and Georgia both signed 8 OL for 2022, while Penn State signed only 3.

Such comments make one wonder about why the OL is annually such a disappointment.

Anybody feel like we were running the Air Raid yesterday?

Except we took out the short passes, the RB dump offs, and the screens?

Look at our rushing stats. RBs got 10 touches. 2 of which were on our final offensive possession. Backs were running good too. Don't think we had a negative play.

Yep, someone pointed out Franklin is like RichRod at Michigan….you have a whole team of WRs and DBs and nothing at OL or DL. There’s a lot of truth to that.

On the surface I agree with you. Problem is the offense doesn’t appear to be evolving but rather devolving. Whether it is personnel, preparation or game planning, one should expect progress and when there isn’t there maybe be no magic number to diagnose a problem. Tolerance may not be all that possible in a multimillion dollar enterprise and perhaps it shouldn’t be. Remember the kids didn’t come here to “play school” but to train for a career. From Penn States perspective fill seats. IMHO
