This is not a knock on Dean, but I’m expecting strong defense to be a staple of this team. It would be hard to play a defense first style with 2 bigs playing together often (except if we’re pressing - that’s different as Dean is great in the middle role with his long arms and Cliff down below as the rim protector). We just wouldn’t be fast enough in the half court and since we’ll have limited front depth fouls will be a big concern. If Dean Reiber works hard and hits the weight room he can fill the back up 5 and the 4 ( PF) Caleb will be a ( SF) snd off guard. I like Mawot and Hyatt to give us length and depth. People say Reiber will be too slow to defend on the outside ? I’ll hold judgement on that part of his game and see if he can improve that part of his D. In fact I’ll look to see all of them improve on the off D . Being together again will give this team a chance especially if Caleb returns.
You have to understand , we’re set up (assuming Caleb returns) to be pretty darn good on defense. Cliff really improved year over year. Paul’s defense has improved year over year too. Mag is a strong defender and Hyatt was coming to his own at the 4 late last season. We know the deal with Caleb - he’d obviously be the centerpiece of the defense. Cam Spencer is a question mark but I’m feeling pretty good about him too based on his comments. He’s a student of the game - not the kind of kid looking to come in and “get his”. I expect him to be a hussle player too.
