Tonight I saw something at a high school football game I've never seen. Western Alamance where I attended were playing cross town rival Burlington Williams . W.A. has a very good kicker. His kick offs were going out of the end zone. At one point in the game Williams punted and W.A. mad a fair catch on their own 36. I look up and it appears W.A. is in kick off mode and Williams has all their players from within their own 30. The W.A. kicker then kicks the ball as if attempting a f.g. but from the tee. He gave it a shot and the kick was wide right but plenty of distance . If good it would have been a 64 yard f.g. What I found out is that if a team makes a fair catch they can free kick for 3 points. Never seen this ever. Just goes to show that you don't know everything. The kid did make a 52 yard f.g. later in the game that would have been good from at least 65. Hoping Duke is looking at this kid. His name is Joshua Karty and supposed to be one of the top high school kickers in the nation.

As a special teams HS coach, this is 1 of those fun rules that 95% of teams don’t know about. Always fun to watch opposing coaches ***** about it. Unfortunately we are 0-3 doing this but still fun and exciting. To our FG team’s “excuse” every time we’ve tried it’s been 53 yards +. Did have a kid set a state record in our state making a 57 yarder in the smallest 11 man class.

I didn't know you had that option after a fair catch either? Was time expiring? Wondering why they didn't try to get closer.? Interesting that you can do that though. Never knew that

The other team is not allowed to defend the free kick - they can’t attempt to block it.

No. Time was not expiring. W.A was in control the whole game but the kicker was kicking the ball close to 70 yards every time he kicked off. I'm not kidding. I guess the W.A. coach wanted to give him a shot at a 60 plus yard field goal. He came really close to making it. I heard the state high school record for a f.g. is 57 yards. Don't know that for sure . This kid is just a junior and like I stated in my O.P. he did make a 52 yard f.g. in the game. OFC
